Pope Francis opposes capital punishment, too!

I was really jazzed to read Sam Lucero’s spot on editorial in the November 27, 2020 Compass, “Church teaching oppose executions.“ Sam is News and Information Manager for my home diocese of Green Bay, Wisc. According to Lucero:

Since July 14, 2020, when the Trump administration restarted federal executions, eight people on death row have been executed. As of Nov. 23, five more inmates (including Lisa Montgomery, the only woman on federal death row) are scheduled for execution before president-elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2021.

Before this year, the federal government executed only three people in the last 50 years, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Lucero cites current positions of the United States Catholic Bishops, the Old Testament (Exodus 21: 23-25), and the New Testament (Matthew 5:38-39) to undergird the fact that capital punishment is contrary to one of…
