Maura was his newlywed wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had been married for less than a month when persecution broke out in Egypt during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timothy was arrested and ordered to surrender the Christian books in his care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authorities tortured him mercilessly, demanding that he reveal where the Scriptures were hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, he would not betray Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the governor learned that Timothy had recently married, he ordered Maura to be brought before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps, he thought, she could persuade her husband to give in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, she strengthened him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing before the governor, Maura boldly professed her faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enraged officials turned their cruelty upon her as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For days, the young couple endured horrific tortures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their bodies were broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their wounds multiplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet neither abandoned Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient accounts tell us that during their suffering, Timothy and Maura encouraged one another to remain faithful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than despair, they spoke of Heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than fear death, they fixed their eyes on eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the governor sentenced them both to crucifixion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two crosses were erected facing one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nine long days, the young husband and wife hung there in agony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet rather than despair, they encouraged one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They prayed together. They sang hymns.
