“Nalla Mathave” is sung exclusively during the month of may which is the Marian month (Vanakka masam) according to the syrian tradition. My grandmother taught us this song as a way of handing down the beautiful tradition of Marian devotion, which was a norm among the malabar christians. The crux of this song is about surrendering oneself to the Holy family and seeking their protection.
This song has so many versions, covers and remixes. Obviously, because it traces back its origin to the traditional singing of ancient Malabar Christians and the literature used in this song is a proof of this.Through centuries it had undergone many changes in the hands of a number of musicians. Though the original writer and composer is anonymous, it is believed to have been a popular song venerating St. Mary the mother of Jesus. There is a general belief that this song existed even in the pre-Koonan Cross Oath period (Koonan Kurishu Sathyam) which happened in Mattancherry in 1653.
In this re-creation, a sincere effort has been made to keep it pristine with the original lyrics and music.
