2Corfintians 1:5  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 

If Jesus didn’t suffer, did not die and rise again to be with Our Farther in heaven, we HAVE NO HOPE. However because His mercy abounds He sends us His Holy Spirit, to comfort us in our sorrow, in our joy and in our peace of mind, that His power to redeem us has no end, no expiration date. He is not a bag of potato chips that goes stale.
