July 28 – St. Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception
Patron Saint of the sick
Alphonsa was born on August 19, 1910, at Muttathupadam House Kudamalur – Kerala, as the fourth daughter of Joseph and Mary. Alphonsa’s mother, Mary, was pregnant when she saw a snake crawling on her legs one day while she was asleep. So Alphonsa was born by the 8th month of pregnancy period.When she was eight days old, she was baptized and given the name ‘Annakutty’. Annakutty’s mother died three months after she was born. She was then lovingly raised by her grandmother. Grandmother raised Annakutty in godliness, taught her to pray and played an important role in shaping her character. Annakutty had the nature of loving everyone and associating with them without being confined within the barriers of caste or religion. Lakshmikutty (a non christian girl) was her best friend in the group. Grandparents usually tell a lot of stories to their grandchildren. Annakutty’s grandmother also used to tell her many stories. Those were all biographies of saints. In this, the St Therese of of Lisieux had a strong influence on Annakutty. Annakutty, who was a great devotee of Little Flower, longed to live for Jesus as a holy nun like that saint and dedicated her virginity to the Crucified one at an early age.
Annakutty received her first holy communion on November 11, 1917 from Kudamalur Church and in the same year she was admitted to Thonnamkuzhi Government Primary School. After completing her primary education, she was taken to her Godmother’s home.(Her mother’s elder sister) Annakutty was loved by her aunt more than her own children. Annakutty loved her too and vice versa. Annakutty was raised by her Aunt not as her younger sister’s daughter but as her own daughter. According to the custom of the time, Annakutty’s aunt started seeking marriage proposals for her at the age of thirteen. Being beautiful looking, she started getting a lot of good proposals. One of them selected by her aunt and decided to confirm. But when Annakkutty told her aunt that she wanted to live as a nun, her aunt cried and scolded her. Seeing the attempts fail, Annakutty decided to destroy the external beauty of her that had stood in this way. For that, she once burned her feet in the fireflame.
She says: “My marriage was arranged when I was thirteen years old. What can I do to avoid it? I prayed all night. Then I had an idea. If my body gets a little ugly, no one will like me !. Oh what I just endured. All this I have done for the great purpose within me ”.
Murikkan Pothachan, who was leading a leisure life at Muthuchira Church in those days, and father Joseph, the vicar of Aruvittura Church, gave future advice to Annakutty. Their advice was to join the Fransiscan Clarist Congregation, which sees St. Francis of Assisi as a spiritual leader. For that, on May 24, 1927, she joined their governing college, where she began her seventh grade studies. On August 2, 1928, Annakutty adopted the veil as the first step towards becoming a nun.
She was named “Alphonsa” in honor of St. Alphonse Ligori, as it was the feast day of St. Alphonse Ligori. Alphonsa returned to the Church for the reception of the Eucharist and received the Eucharist on May 19, 1930, at the Forane Church, By Bishop James Kalassery, Diocese of Changanassery.
The period 1930-1935 was a time of sickness for the saint. In 1932, she worked as a teacher in Convent of St Clare’s Primary School, Wakakkad, Kottayam District of Kerala India. But due to ill health, Alphonsa was able to stay in that position for only one year. Due to her illness, she worked as a co-teacher and catechism teacher in the parish church.
Subsequently, on August 12, 1935, she was admitted to the Changanassery Clarist convent for novice. Ursulamma, the mother superior who received Alphonsa at the Bharananganam convent, and also She received father Louis , a priest and parishioner of Alphonsa, as her teacher and spiritual guide, respectively. One week after starting Novice, Alphonsa became ill again. She had bleeding from her nose and sores on her legs.
At that tragic moment, Father Elias Kuriakose Chavara, a servant of God and now a catholic saint, came to her rescue. Through St Kuriakose Chavara, her illness was miraculously cured. Alphonsa, though temporarily relieved of her ailments, made her vows on August 12, 1936, at St. Clare’s Feast, at the Changanassery convent. From that moment on, she had the impression that part of Jesus’ cross had been given to her. Jesus completed his bride through a life of suffering.
On August 14, she returned to ill again. The saint suffered many afflictions from various ailments. Typhoid, fever, and pneumonia plagued the saint one after another. In October 1940, while everyone was going to the chapel for evening prayers, Alphonsa heard a footstep. When she look around her room, she saw a black man who was a thief. Others who heard Alphonsa’s screams in fear immediately fled and the thief escaped. But others believed the incident was true because the stolen items were recovered from there. Frightened by the incident, Alphonsa fainted and mentally abnormal for some days.
In 1945, the saint became seriously ill. The various ailments that plagued her body made her last moments miserable. The saint would vomit forty times a day due to inflammation of the stomach and stomach ailments. Thus, at the barden of her illness, on July 28, 1946, at the Franciscan Clarist Monastery, Alphonsa’s soul went to the heaven for her Bridegroom, By chanting “Jesus Mary Joseph.”
She was elevated to the rank of Servant of God on December 2, 1953 and to the rank of venerable on November 9, 1984. On February 8, 1986, Alphonsa was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI canonized Alphonsa on October 12, 2008, along with three other Blessed Ones. The shrine where Alphonsa’s tomb is located is known as the Lisiuex of India.

1910 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 19 ന് കുടമാളൂരിൽ മുട്ടത്തുപാടത്ത് വീട്ടിൽ ജോസഫ് മേരി ദമ്പതികളുടെ നാലാമത്തെ മകളായി അൽഫോൻസാ ജനിച്ചു. അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയുടെ മാതാവ് മേരി അവളെ ഗർഭം ധരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കാലയളവിൽ , ഒരു ദിവസം ഉറങ്ങുന്ന സമയത്തു ഒരു പാമ്പ് തന്റെ കാലുകളിൽ ചുറ്റിയത് കണ്ടു അവർ ഭയന്നു വിറച്ചു പോയിരുന്നു.അതിനാൽ തന്നെ മാസം തികയാതെയാണ് അൽഫോൻസാ പിറന്നത്. ജനിച്ചു എട്ടാം ദിവസമായപ്പോൾ അവൾക്ക് മാമ്മോദീസ നൽകുകയും ‘അന്നക്കുട്ടി’ എന്ന പേര് നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു. മാസം തികയാതെ പ്രസവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നതിനെ തുടർന്ന് വളരെ ശാരീരിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുകയും അന്നക്കുട്ടി ജനിച്ചു മൂന്ന് മാസങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം അവളുടെ അമ്മ മരണപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് അവളുടെ വല്യമ്മച്ചിയാണ് അവളെ സ്നേഹത്തോടെ വളർത്തിയത്. വല്യമ്മച്ചി അന്നക്കുട്ടിയെ ദൈവഭക്തിയിൽ വളർത്തുകയും പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാൻ പഠിപ്പിക്കുകയും അവളുടെ സ്വഭാവരൂപികരണത്തിൽ സുപ്രധാനമായ ഒരു പങ്കു വഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ജാതിയുടെയോ മതത്തിന്റെയോ വേലിക്കെട്ടുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ ഒതുങ്ങി നിൽക്കാതെ എല്ലാവരെയും ഒരുപോലെ സ്നേഹിക്കുകയും അവരോട് കൂട്ടുക്കൂടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രകൃതമാണ് അന്നക്കുട്ടിക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ അവളുടെ ആത്മസഖി ആയിരുന്നു ലക്ഷ്മിക്കുട്ടി. സാധാരണ കൊച്ചുമക്കൾക്ക് മുത്തശ്ശിമാർ ഒരുപാട് കഥകൾ പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുമല്ലോ. അന്നക്കുട്ടിയുടെ വല്യമ്മച്ചിയും അവൾക്ക് ധാരാളം കഥകൾ പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുമായിരുന്നു. അതെല്ലാം വിശുദ്ധരുടെ ജീവചരിത്രങ്ങൾ ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതിൽ ലിസ്യുവിലെ ഉണ്ണിയേശുവിന്റെ വിശുദ്ധ കൊച്ചുത്രേസ്യാ അന്നക്കുട്ടിയിൽ ശക്തമായ സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തിയിരുന്നു. ചെറുപുഷ്പത്തിന്റെ വലിയ ഭക്തയായിരുന്ന അന്നക്കുട്ടി ആ പുണ്യവതിയെ പോലെ ഒരു വിശുദ്ധയായ കന്യാസ്ത്രീയായി ഈശോയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി ജീവിക്കണമെന്നു അതിയായി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും തന്റെ കന്യകാത്വം ബാല്യത്തിൽ തന്നെ ക്രൂശിതന് സമർപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
1917 നവംബർ 11 ന് കുടമാളൂർ പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്നും അന്നക്കുട്ടി ആദ്യകുർബാന സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും അതേ വർഷം തന്നെ അവളെ തൊണ്ണാംകുഴി സർക്കാർ പ്രൈമറി സ്കൂളിൽ ചേർക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പ്രാഥമീക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം കഴിഞ്ഞയുടൻ അവളുടെ പേരമ്മ മുട്ടുചിറയിലെ മുരിക്കവീട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. അന്നക്കുട്ടിയെ സ്വന്തം മക്കളേക്കാൾ അധികമായി അവളുടെ പേരമ്മ അവളെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു. അന്നക്കുട്ടി നേരെ തിരിച്ചും ജീവന് തുല്യം അവരെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു. അനുജത്തിയുടെ മകളായിട്ടല്ല മറിച്ച് സ്വന്തം പുത്രി എന്ന നിലയിലാണ് അന്നക്കുട്ടിയെ പേരമ്മ വളർത്തിയിരുന്നത്. അന്നത്തെ നാട്ടുനടപ്പ് അനുസരിച്ചു അന്നക്കുട്ടിക്ക് പതിമൂന്നാം വയസ്സിൽ പേരമ്മ വിവാഹ ആലോചനകൾ തുടങ്ങി. സുന്ദരിയായിരുന്നതിനാൽ അവൾക്ക് ഒരുപാട് നല്ല ആലോചനകൾ വന്നു തുടങ്ങി. അങ്ങനെ ഒത്തു വന്ന ഒരാലോചന അവളുടെ പേരമ്മ ഉറപ്പിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ താൻ ഒരു കന്യാസ്ത്രീയായി ജീവിക്കാൻ ആണ് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പേരമ്മയോട് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അവർ നിലവിളിക്കുകയും അവളെ ശകാരിക്കുകകയും ചെയ്തു. ശ്രമങ്ങൾ വിഫലമാകുന്നത് കണ്ടു അന്നക്കുട്ടി തനിക്ക് മുന്നിൽ തടസമായിരുന്ന സൗന്ദര്യം നശിപ്പിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അതിനായി ഒരിക്കൽ ഉമിതീയിൽ പാദങ്ങൾ പൊള്ളിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.
ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അവള് ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു: “എനിക്ക് പതിമൂന്ന് വയസ്സ് പ്രായമായപ്പോള് എന്റെ കല്ല്യാണം നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അതൊഴിവാക്കുവാനായി ഞാന് എന്ത് ചെയ്യണം? ആ രാത്രി മുഴുവന് ഞാന് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചു. അപ്പോള് എനിക്കൊരു ബുദ്ധിതോന്നി. എന്റെ ശരീരം കുറച്ചു വികൃതമായാല്, എന്നെ ആരും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയില്ല!. ഓ ഞാന് എന്ത് മാത്രം സഹിച്ചു. ഇതെല്ലാം ഞാന് എന്റെ ഉള്ളിലുള്ള മഹത്തായ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിനായി ചെയ്തതാണ്”.
ആ നാളുകളിൽ മുട്ടുചിറ പള്ളിയിൽ വിശ്രമ ജീവിതം നയിച്ചിരുന്ന മുരിക്കൻ പോത്തച്ചനും, അരുവിത്തുറ പള്ളി വികാരിയായിരുന്ന മുട്ടത്തുപാടത്ത് യൗസേപ്പച്ചനും അന്നക്കുട്ടിയ്ക്ക് ഭാവി ഉപദേശം നൽകി. വിശുദ്ധ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് അസ്സീസ്സിയെ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക നേതാവായി കാണുന്ന ക്ലാരിസ്റ്റ് കോൺഗ്രിഗേഷനിൽ ചേരുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു അവർ നൽകിയ ഉപദേശം. അതിനായി 1927 മേയ് 24-ന് അവള് ഭരണങ്ങാനത്തുള്ള അവരുടെ കോളേജില് ചേര്ന്ന് അവിടെ താമസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഏഴാം തരത്തിനു പഠിക്കുവാന് തുടങ്ങി. കന്യാസ്ത്രീയാകുന്നതിന്റെ ആദ്യപടിയായി 1928 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് രണ്ടിന് അന്നക്കുട്ടി ശിരോവസ്ത്രം സ്വീകരിച്ചു.
ആ ദിവസം വിശുദ്ധ അൽഫോൻസ് ലിഗോരിയുടെ തിരുനാൾ ദിവസമായിരുന്നതിനാല്, വിശുദ്ധ അൽഫോൻസ് ലിഗോരിയുടെ ആദരണാര്ത്ഥം ‘അല്ഫോന്സ’ എന്ന നാമമാണ് അവള്ക്ക് നല്കപ്പെട്ടത്. സഭാവസ്ത്ര സ്വീകരണത്തിനായി അൽഫോൻസ ഭരണങ്ങാനത്ത് തിരിച്ചെത്തുകയും 1930 മേയ് 19-ന് ഭരണങ്ങാനം ഫൊറോന പള്ളിയിൽ വച്ച് ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി രൂപതാ മെത്രാൻ മാർ ജെയിംസ് കാളാശ്ശേരിയിൽ നിന്നും സഭാവസ്ത്രം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
1930-1935 കാലയളവ് വിശുദ്ധയെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം അസുഖങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു കാലമായിരുന്നു. 1932-ല് കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ വാകക്കാട് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ ക്ലാരമഠം വക പ്രൈമറി സ്കൂളിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപികയായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ അനാരോഗ്യം നിമിത്തം ഒരു വർഷം മാത്രമാണ് ആ സ്ഥാനത്തു തുടരുവാൻ അല്ഫോന്സക്ക് സാധിച്ചത്. അനാരോഗ്യം കാരണം അവള് ഒരു സഹ-അദ്ധ്യാപകയുടെ ചുമതലയും, കൂടാതെ ഇടവക പള്ളിയിലെ വേദോപദേശ അദ്ധ്യാപകയുമായി വര്ത്തിച്ചു പോന്നു.
തുടർന്ന് 1935 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 12-ന് ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി ക്ലാരമഠത്തിൽ അവള് നൊവിഷ്യേറ്റിനായി പ്രവേശിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അൽഫോൻസയെ ഭരണങ്ങാനം മഠത്തിൽ സ്വീകരിച്ച ഉർസുലാമ്മയും, സി.എം.ഐ. വൈദികനും അൽഫോൻസയുടെ ഇടവകാംഗവുമായ ളൂയീസച്ചനുമാണ് യഥാക്രമം ഗുരുഭൂതയായും ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക ഗുരുവായും അവള്ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചത്. നൊവിഷ്യേറ്റ് ആരംഭിച്ച് ഒരാഴ്ചക്ക് ശേഷം അൽഫോൻസ വീണ്ടും രോഗബാധിതയായി. അവള്ക്ക് മൂക്കില് നിന്നും രക്തസ്രാവം ഉണ്ടാവുകയും, കാലില് വ്രണം ഉണ്ടാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
വളരെ ദുരിതപൂര്ണ്ണമായ ആ അവസരത്തില് ദൈവദാസനും, ഇപ്പോള് വിശുദ്ധനുമായ ഏലിയാസ് കുരിയാക്കോസ് ചാവറ പിതാവ് അവളുടെ രക്ഷക്കെത്തി. ചാവറ പിതാവിന്റെ മാദ്ധ്യസ്ഥത്താല് അവളുടെ അസുഖം അത്ഭുതകരമായി സൌഖ്യം പ്രാപിച്ചു. രോഗപീഡകളിൽ നിന്നും താൽകാലികമായെങ്കിലും മോചിതയായ അൽഫോൻസ 1936 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 12-ന് വിശുദ്ധ ക്ലാരായുടെ തിരുനാള് ദിവസം ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി മഠത്തിൽ വച്ച് നിത്യവ്രതവാഗ്ദാനം നടത്തി. ആ സമയം മുതല് യേശുവിന്റെ കുരിശിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം തന്നില് ഏല്പ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു പ്രതീതിയായിരുന്നു അവള്ക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. യേശു തന്റെ മണവാട്ടിയെ സഹനങ്ങള് നിറഞ്ഞ ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു പൂര്ണ്ണയാക്കിയിരുന്നത്.
ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 14-ന് അവള് ഭരണങ്ങാനത്തേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോന്നു. വിവിധ തരത്തിലുള്ള അസുഖങ്ങളാല് വിശുദ്ധ ഏറെ സഹനങ്ങള് ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ടൈഫോയ്ഡ്, പനി, ന്യൂമോണിയ എന്നീ അസുഖങ്ങള് ഒന്നിന് പിറകെ ഒന്നായി വിശുദ്ധയെ പിടികൂടി. 1940 ഒക്ടോബർ മാസം സന്ധ്യാപ്രർഥനകൾക്കായി എല്ലാവരും ചാപ്പലിൽ പോയ സമയത്ത് അൽഫോൻസ ഒരു കാൽപ്പെരുമാറ്റം കേട്ടു. അവിടേക്ക് തന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടികളെ അയച്ചപ്പോൾ കറുത്തിരുണ്ട ഒരു മനുഷ്യനെ കണ്ടു. ഭയന്നു നിലവിളിച്ച അൽഫോൻസയുടെ ശബ്ദം കേട്ട മറ്റുള്ളവർ ഉടൻ ഓടി എത്തുകയും കള്ളൻ രക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാൽ മോഷണവസ്തുക്കൾ അവിടെ നിന്നും ലഭിച്ചതിനാൽ സംഭവം സത്യമെന്നു മറ്റുള്ളവർ വിശ്വസിച്ചു. ഈ സംഭവത്താൽ ഭയപ്പെട്ട അൽഫോൻസ തളർന്നു പോവുകയും കുറച്ചു നാൾ മാനസീക പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് കഴിയുകയും, ശേഷം ബോധാവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് തിരികെ വരികയും ചെയ്തു.
1945-ല് വിശുദ്ധക്ക് അതികലശലായ അസുഖം പിടിപ്പെട്ടു. അവളുടെ ശരീരത്തെ കീഴടക്കിയ നാനാവിധ രോഗങ്ങള് അവളുടെ അന്ത്യ നിമിഷങ്ങള് ദുരിതപൂര്ണ്ണമാക്കി. ആമാശയ വീക്കവും, ഉദര സംബന്ധമായ അസുഖങ്ങളും കാരണം വിശുദ്ധ ഒരു ദിവസം തന്നെ നാല്പ്പത് പ്രാവശ്യത്തോളം ഛര്ദ്ദിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. അപ്രകാരം രോഗാവസ്ഥയുടെ പാരമ്യതയില്, 1946 ജൂലൈ 28നു ഭരണങ്ങാനം ഫ്രാന്സിസ്കന് ക്ലാരിസ്റ്റ് മഠത്തില് വെച്ച് ‘ഈശോ മറിയം യൗസേപ്പേ’ എന്നു ഉച്ചരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടു അല്ഫോന്സ ദിവ്യമണവാളന്റെ പക്കലേക്ക് യാത്രയായി.
1953 ഡിസംബര് 2-നു ദൈവദാസിയായും 1984 നവംബര് 9നു ധന്യ പദവിയിലേക്കും അവള് ഉയര്ത്തപ്പെട്ടു. 40 വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം 1986 ഫെബ്രുവരി എട്ടാം തീയതി അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയെ വിശുദ്ധ ജോൺ പോൾ രണ്ടാമൻ മാർപ്പാപ്പ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ടവളായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. 2008 മാർച്ച് ഒന്നാം തിയതി ബെനഡിക്ട് പതിനാറാമൻ മാർപ്പാപ്പ അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയെ വിശുദ്ധപദവിയിലേയ്ക്ക് ഉയർത്താൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും, 2008 ഒക്ടോബർ പന്ത്രണ്ടിന് മറ്റു മൂന്ന് വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ടവരോടൊപ്പം അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയെ വിശുദ്ധയായി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയുടെ കബറിടം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഭരണങ്ങാനം ഭാരതത്തിന്റെ ലിസ്യു എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
