The Seven Promises of the Seven Sorrows

Mary, mother of Jesus, was a mother more loving than all other mothers. She loved more than all mothers combined, even if their affections were united into one ineffable expression of love. This is because both natural and supernatural love were united in the heart of Mary.

She loved Jesus as her Son and she loved Him as her God. Mary stood, she did not collapse in anguish, at the foot of the cross, and watched her Son suffer and die. In her anguish, where could she turn her gaze for consolation, as she stood beneath the cross? Where did Mary look for consolation in those hours of excruciating pain? To Jesus.

To Jesus. When we suffer we can lift our eyes to Jesus and find solace there. As Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Blessed Mother granted several promises for those who would honor her under this title.

Our Blessed Mother revealed these seven promises to Saint Bridget of Sweden in the 14th century. Our Lady said she would bestow seven graces to the those souls honoring her daily by saying seven Hail Marys while meditating on her tears and sorrows. Promises to those who meditate on her seven sorrows.

First, “I will grant peace to their families.”

Second, “they will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.”

Third, “I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.”

Fourth, “I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine son or the sanctification of their souls.”

Fifth, “I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.”

Sixth, “I will visibly help them at the moment of their death. They will see the face of their mother.”

Seventh, “I have obtained this grace from my divine son that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolores will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my son will be their eternal consolation and joy.”

We pray and meditate the seven sorrows rosary to learn to suffer with love as Mary, the mother of Jesus, did.
