Some saints preached to thousands.
Others changed the world through silence.
Saint Charbel Makhlouf was one of those saints.
He spent most of his life hidden away in prayer, fasting, and solitude inside the mountains of Lebanon. Yet after his death, millions around the world would hear his name because of the extraordinary miracles connected to him.
Christians and even non-Christians travel to his monastery seeking healing, comfort, and hope.
Here are five fascinating facts about the saint many people call “the miracle monk of Lebanon.”
➊ 𝗛𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗸.
Saint Charbel was born Yousef Antoun Makhlouf in 1828 in the mountains of Northern Lebanon.
From childhood, he loved silence and prayer more than worldly pleasures. While tending his family’s sheep, he would often bring them near a small grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and spend hours praying there alone.
That cave became his “first monastery.”
At only 23 years old, he secretly left home and entered the Lebanese Maronite Order. When he became a monk, he took the name “Charbel,” after an early Christian martyr.
He later became a priest at 31 and eventually chose an even more difficult life — becoming a hermit completely devoted to God.
For the last 23 years of his life, silence, prayer, fasting, and the Eucharist became his entire world.
➋ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲.
Saint Charbel was known for extraordinary humility.
According to those who lived with him, he almost never looked directly at people. He walked with his eyes lowered to the ground and lifted them only toward heaven or the altar during prayer.
One monk later wrote that even after death, his eyes remained closed exactly as they had been during life — hidden from the world.
His entire life pointed away from himself and toward God.
And perhaps that is why God would later glorify him before the entire world.
➌ 𝗛𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁.
Saint Charbel had an intense love for the Eucharist.
On December 16, 1898, while praying during the Divine Liturgy, he suffered a stroke while reciting these words:
«“Father of Truth, behold Your Son, a sacrifice pleasing to You…”»
He never fully recovered.
A few days later, on Christmas Eve, Saint Charbel died peacefully near the Blessed Sacrament after a lifetime completely surrendered to Christ.
But strangely… his death was only the beginning.
➍ 𝗔 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗯.
After Saint Charbel was buried, monks and villagers began reporting something extraordinary.
A bright light repeatedly appeared over his tomb.
The glowing light was seen illuminating the tomb for exactly 45 nights following his burial.
The mysterious light was observed not only by local monks but also by villagers and neighboring Muslims, drawing large crowds to the cemetery.
Because of this recurring light, Church authorities exhumed his body. They were astonished to find that the body had not decomposed—despite being buried directly in the earth without a casket.
Reports also claimed that blood and water-like fluid flowed from his body for many years after his death.
This light marked the beginning of thousands of reported miracles and healings attributed to his intercession.
➎ 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗺.
Saint Charbel became especially known for miraculous healings.
The monastery of Annaya in Lebanon has recorded tens of thousands of testimonies connected to his intercession — including healings from paralysis, cancer, blindness, strokes, and other serious illnesses.
One of the most famous cases involved a nun named Sister Mary Abel Kamary, who suffered severe internal illnesses and paralysis for 14 years.
After praying through Saint Charbel’s intercession and visiting his tomb, she reportedly experienced an immediate healing.
Even today, countless people continue to testify that prayers through Saint Charbel brought them healing, peace, and impossible answers.
In 1977, canonized him as a saint.
But perhaps the most beautiful part of Saint Charbel’s story is this:
He never sought fame.
Never wanted attention.
Never tried to become known.
He simply wanted God.
And somehow, the monk who spent his life hidden in silence became one of the most beloved miracle saints in the world.
St. Charbel, pray for us.
