The Seven Joys of Mary

The “Seven Joys of Mary” is a traditional Catholic devotion, celebrating seven especially joyful events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Here they are, along with a brief explanation for each:

The Seven Joys of Mary

  1. The Annunciation
Mary’s joy in hearing the angel Gabriel announce that she would be the Mother of God (Luke 1:26-38).
  2. The Visitation
Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, who greets her as “the mother of my Lord,” and John the Baptist leaps for joy in Elizabeth’s womb (Luke 1:39-56).
  3. The Nativity of Jesus
The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, bringing great joy to Mary, the angels, the shepherds, and all the world (Luke 2:1-20).
  4. The Adoration of the Magi
The Wise Men come from the East to adore the Christ Child, warming Mary’s heart with their gifts and homage (Matthew 2:1-12).
  5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
After three days of anxious searching, Mary and Joseph find the young Jesus teaching in the Temple (Luke 2:41-51).
  6. The Resurrection of Christ
Mary rejoices at the glorious Resurrection of her Son from the dead, victory over sin and death (John 20:1-18, tradition holds Mary was the first to see the Risen Christ).
  7. The Assumption & Coronation of Mary
Mary is assumed body and soul into Heaven and crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth, sharing forever in the joy of her Son (Revelation 12:1, Catholic tradition).
