In the summer of 1716, a massive Ottoman army of nearly 200,000 troops advanced to conquer Christian Europe. At Petrovaradin (Peterwardein), Prince Eugene of Savoy commanded a vastly outnumbered force of about 60,000 men. The outlook was grim — defeat seemed almost certain.
Pope Clement XI, fully aware of the danger threatening Christendom, called on the faithful throughout Europe to pray the Holy Rosary unceasingly and to organize public processions. On August 5, 1716 — the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows — a thick, unexpected fog suddenly descended upon the battlefield.
This heavenly veil blinded the Ottoman forces while allowing Prince Eugene to execute a masterful surprise attack. The Christian army achieved a stunning and complete victory that day.
In deep thanksgiving to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Clement XI extended the Feast of the Holy Rosary to the entire universal Church. We still celebrate this beautiful feast every October 7th.
