Theme: “Jesus, Our Bread of Life”
Dear children, parents, and beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today is a joyful and holy day! Our dear children are receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the very first time. This is not just a tradition or a ceremony—it is an encounter with the living Lord.
In the Gospel of John (6:51), Jesus says: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” These words remind us that in the Eucharist, Jesus gives us Himself—His Body, His Blood, His Soul, and His Divinity.
1. Jesus comes close to us
Children, until now you have prayed to Jesus, spoken with Him, and loved Him in your heart. But today, something new happens—Jesus comes to dwell within you in a very special way. When you receive Him in Holy Communion, He becomes your food and strength. Just like we cannot live without bread and water, our soul cannot live without Jesus.
2. A meal of love and unity
At every Mass, we gather as God’s family around His table. The Eucharist is not only Jesus giving Himself to us—it is also Jesus bringing us together as brothers and sisters. Communion means “union with.” By receiving the Body of Christ, we are united to Him and to one another.
3. A gift to be treasured
This gift is so precious that we must prepare our hearts every time. That’s why we go to confession, say our prayers, and come to Mass with love. When you receive Jesus, whisper to Him in your heart: “Jesus, I love You. Stay with me always.”
4. A life of gratitude
Think of the story in Luke 17, where Jesus healed ten lepers but only one came back to say thank you. Jesus noticed that. So, too, we must always return to Jesus with gratitude. Each time you receive Communion, remember to say, “Thank You, Jesus, for giving Yourself to me.”
Conclusion
Dear children, today is the beginning of a lifelong friendship with Jesus. You will never be alone, because Jesus will always walk with you, feed you, and strengthen you. Parents, your example of faith will help your children treasure this sacrament. Let us all renew our own love for the Eucharist, so that every Mass may be a real encounter with the living Lord.
So, dear children, welcome Jesus into your hearts today with joy, love, and gratitude. And may this First Holy Communion be the first of many, many happy meetings with Jesus in the Eucharist.
Child Friendly Version
First Holy Communion Sermon (Child-Friendly with Story)
Dear children,
Today is a very special day—because for the very first time, you are going to receive Jesus in Holy Communion!
Let me ask you: when you are hungry, what do you need? Food! Without food, our bodies feel weak. In the same way, our soul also needs food to grow strong. And the food for our soul is Jesus Himself in the Holy Eucharist.
When you receive Communion, Jesus comes to live inside you. He is not far away—He is right in your heart. He wants to be your best friend, always with you.
A Little Story
There was once a little boy who loved flying kites. One day, his kite went so high into the clouds that he could not see it anymore. A man walked by and asked,
“Why are you still holding that string? The kite is gone—you can’t even see it!”
But the boy smiled and said,
“Oh no, sir. I can’t see it, but I can feel the pull. I know my kite is still there.”
Children, that’s just like Jesus in the Eucharist. We cannot see Him with our eyes, but we can feel His love in our hearts. He is really there, just like the kite was really there.
What to Do Today
When you come up to receive Jesus today, remember three little prayers you can whisper in your heart:
👉 “Thank You, Jesus, for loving me.”
👉 “Stay with me always.”
👉 “Help me to love You and others.”
Conclusion
Dear children, today is the beginning of a beautiful friendship with Jesus. Every time you receive Holy Communion, you are feeding your soul and growing closer to Him. Keep your hearts pure and full of love, so that Jesus will always feel at home in you.
Congratulations, dear children! Today, heaven is rejoicing with you.
Closing Prayer for First Holy Communion
Let us pray.
Dear Jesus,
Today these children have welcomed You into their hearts for the very first time.
Bless them and keep them always close to You.
May their love for the Eucharist grow stronger each day.
Fill their lives with joy, peace, and kindness,
so that everyone who meets them may see Your light.
Bless their parents, families, and teachers,
who have guided them to this holy moment.
Help them to be good examples of faith and love.
Lord Jesus, stay with these children always.
Protect them, guide them, and make them saints in Your kingdom.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
