The Four Degrees of Honor in the Catholic Church

LATRIA

Worship given to God alone — the supreme adoration due to the Most Holy Trinity.

HYPERDULIA

The highest form of veneration given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring her unique role as Mother of God.

PROTODULIA

Special veneration given first to St. Joseph, recognizing his preeminent role as Patron of the Universal Church and Guardian of the Holy Family.

DULIA

Veneration given to the other saints, honoring their holy lives and asking for their intercession.

These degrees of honor reflect the proper order of love and reverence in the Communion of Saints.
