Catholic Veneration of Saints:
Worship vs. Honor
Does the Catholic worship the saints?
NO, Catholics DO NOT worship saints — we only venerate/honor them, and worship belongs ONLY to God . Here is the simple, clear explanation:
The Big Difference (Official Teaching)
– Latria = WORSHIP / ADORATION → ONLY for God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). We bow, pray, sacrifice, and give total devotion only to Him. This is the worship the First Commandment talks about.
– Dulia = VENERATION / HONOR → For saints, holy people, Mary. It is deep respect, admiration, and asking them to pray FOR us — just like you ask your friend or family member to pray for you .
– Hyperdulia = Special Honor → Only for Mary, because she is Mother of God — but still NOT worship, still lower than God.
CCC 2113: “Veneration is not worship. It honors the person, not as God, but as someone close to God and an example for us.”
Biblical Truth
– 1 Timothy 2:5: “There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” → We agree 100%! Jesus is the ONLY Savior and Mediator. Saints are just intercessors — they pray with us and for us, they cannot save us.
– James 5:16: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power.” → Saints are righteous, holy people now in heaven — of course we ask them to pray!
– Revelation 5:8: Shows saints in heaven offering our prayers to God — exactly what we believe.
Tradition
From the very beginning, Christians honored martyrs and holy people, asked their prayers, and remembered their lives — never treated them as gods.
Simple Example
– You have a king. You worship only the King.
– You honor his best, most loyal servants, heroes, and family members. You respect them, ask them to speak to the King for you, and follow their good example.
– You never confuse them with the King.
That is exactly how it is:
– God = King → WORSHIP
– Saints = Heroes/Servants → HONOR & PRAY FOR US
We do not worship statues or images either — they are just pictures/reminders, like a photo of your parents. You love your parents, not the photo. Same with saints: we honor the person, not the statue.
Short answer:
Worship = ONLY GOD
Honor & Prayer Request = SAINTS
Not idolatry, not worship — just respect and asking for prayers.
