The difference between a parish, cathedral, basilica & shrine
Parish
A stable community of the faithful established in a particular church, where a pastor shepherds the people under the authority of the diocesan bishop.
Cathedral
The principal church of a diocese where the bishop’s chair (cathedra) is located. It serves as the mother church of the entire diocese.
Basilica
A church granted special dignity by the Pope due to its historical, spiritual, or architectural importance. It is a place of pilgrimage and special devotion.
Shrine
A sacred place approved by the bishop where a relic is venerated, an apparition has been recognized, or a particular devotion is fostered.
Each has its own beauty and purpose in the life of the Church, reflecting different ways we encounter Christ in community and worship.
