The demons wanted him dead.
They attacked him in the darkness.
They beat him until his body was covered in wounds.
They whispered temptations into his mind.
They tried to fill his heart with fear.
But they could not defeat him.
The Church remembers him as Saint Anthony the Great, the desert saint who waged one of the most famous spiritual battles in Christian history.
Born into a wealthy Christian family in Egypt around the year 251, Anthony gave away everything he owned after hearing Christ’s call in the Gospel.
He left behind wealth, comfort, and security.
Then he went into the desert.
There, he sought only one thing:
God.
But the closer Anthony drew to God, the more fiercely the enemy attacked him.
According to the ancient biography written by Saint Athanasius, demons assaulted Anthony in terrifying ways.
At first, they tempted him with memories of wealth, comfort, and worldly pleasures.
When that failed, they attacked him with fear.
When fear failed, they attacked his body.
One night, while praying in an abandoned tomb, demons appeared and beat him so severely that he was left unconscious on the ground.
Friends later found him barely alive and carried him away.
Most people would have fled.
Anthony returned.
As soon as he entered the tomb again, he declared:
“Here I am, Anthony. I do not fear your blows.”
The demons became enraged.
Ancient accounts describe terrifying visions of wild beasts, lions, serpents, wolves, and monstrous creatures surrounding him in the darkness.
The noise was deafening.
The threats were relentless.
Yet Anthony remained steadfast.
Then suddenly, a brilliant light filled the place.
The demons vanished.
Christ had come to strengthen His servant.
Anthony cried out:
“Where were You, Lord?”
And the Lord replied:
“I was here, Anthony. But I waited to see your struggle. Because you persevered, I will always help you.”
For decades, Anthony continued his life of prayer, fasting, and spiritual warfare.
People traveled from across Egypt seeking his wisdom.
Though he lived in solitude, he became the spiritual father of countless monks and Christians.
His story reminds us that the spiritual life is a battle.
Temptations are real.
Discouragement is real.
The enemy is real.
But God’s grace is greater.
Saint Anthony did not defeat the demons through his own strength.
He defeated them through prayer, humility, perseverance, and complete trust in Christ.
The demons feared him because he feared only God.
Saint Anthony the Great, pray for us.
