Mathew was born on 8th May 1952 in the Aanakkallu parish, Kanjirappally Diocese. Mathai and Mariamma Karikunnel were his parents. He was baptised on 7th June 1952. He was only two years old when his parents migrated to Vilangad in Kozhikode district. He did his primary education at St. George School, Vilangad. Despite the fact that the family has been going through severe financial difficulties the parents wanted their son continue his education. Hence they made necessary arrangements that their son could stay with his uncle, Mathai Anickattukunnel, and continue his education from the fifth standard at the Government High School, Mundieruma, in Idukki district. During those years Mathew came in to close contact with the mcbs priests at Kombayar Ashram. He started assisting at Holy Mass as often as possible. Though he was not very clever at studies, he has been very hard-working and service-minded. As he successfully completed the SSLC, Mathew felt an inclination to join a seminary and sought the advice of the priests

he knew. On their advice he contacted the Minor Seminary of the MCBS, went through the admission process and obtained admission. He joined the seminary on 10th June 1970, and started his studies and formation. By the time he completed the minor seminary course, the congregation had made it mandatory that the seminarians should also go through a two-year Pre-degree course of the university. Hence Mathew and his batch mates had to be in the minor seminary to do the pre-degree course of the university. After the successful completion of PDC, they were promoted to have their novitiate. Mathew and his companions started their novitiate on June 8, 1974 at Podimattam, Kanjirappaly. Fr. Sebastian Parathanam was their novice master, and theirs was the 19th batch of mcbs novices. Novitiate helped him build up a Eucharistic personality acceptable both before God and humans. Mathew Karikunnel made his religious profession on 8th June 1975.

Mathew Karikunnel and two of his companions were asked to do their study of Philosophy and Theology at Dharmaram College, Bangalore, the major seminary of CMI Fathers. It was for the first time that mcbs seminarians were sent to a major seminary that belonged to another religious community. They reached there on 16th June 1975. They were allowed to do their graduate studies at Christ College along with their study of philosophy. During those years, Mathew has been very particular to write his spiritual diary on a daily basis. It reveals how conscious he has been of his mcbs identity and his commitment to deep spirituality. After the successful completion of college graduation and study of philosophy he started with his study of theology in June 1980.

Physically he was not very healthy; he has been easily susceptible to illness. By January 18, 1981 he has been experiencing severe back pain and unable to move about, even to take a step forward. He was admitted in the St. John’s Medical College Hospital. He was diagnosed of suffering from jaundice and pneumonia, and his liver has been badly affected. The doctors tried their best to provide him the best treatment. But by 25th January, Mathew’s health condition turned very critical and at 11:00 a.m. he breathed his last in the Lord.

Mathew Karikunnel has been an exemplary seminarian, and his untimely demise has been heart-rending to everyone at Dhamaram College. Rev. Fr. Justus Thottan CMI, Rector of Dharmaram College, forwarded a very touching message to the MCBS Generalate: ‘Bro. Mathew has been a seminarian loved by everyone, very affable and exemplary, well-motivated spiritually, really a man of God, and very careful not to cause pain in anyone. For us humans his demise might appear to be untimely, but in God’s plan, he has been mature enough to be called to eternity.’ The authorities at the seminary made the necessary arrangements to transport his body to Aluva. On the way there has been a short stop over at his home at Vilangad; and reached MCBS. Study House, Aluva, late in the evening of 26th January. Incidentally, the blessing and inauguration of the newly built MCBS Generalate at Chunangamvely was in the afternoon of 26th January 1981. By 9 in the morning of 27th January Mathew’s body was brought to the Generalate. Bishop Sebastian Mankuzhikaray, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulum, officiated the funeral ceremony. Most of the mcbs priests and seminarians, a few priests and sisters from the neighbouring parishes and religious communities, Mathew’s relatives and friends attended the ceremony.

Deep devotion to the Eucharistic Lord, life of simplicity, humility, spirit of sacrifice and service are a few of the virtues that made Mathew’s personality beautiful.

കാരികുന്നേൽ ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശൻ

കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളി രൂപതയിലെ ആനക്കൽ ഇടവകയിലെ കാരികുന്നേൽ മത്തായി മറിയം ദമ്പതികളുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ മകനായി 1952 മെയ് മാസം എട്ടാം തീയതി മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശൻ ഭൂജാതനായി.

അപ്പച്ചൻ എന്നായിരുന്നു വിളിപ്പേര്.

അപ്പച്ചനു രണ്ടു വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ കുടുംബം മലബാറിലെ വിലങ്ങാട് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് കുടിയേറിപ്പാർത്തു.

1970 ജൂൺ ആറിനു ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു.

സഭയിലെ പത്തൊമ്പതാമത്തെ നോവിഷ്യേറ്റ് ബാച്ചിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്ന മാത്യു 1975 ജൂൺ മാസം എട്ടാം തീയതി പ്രഥമ വ്രതവാഗ്ദാനം നടത്തി.

മേജർ സെമിനാരി പരിശീലനം ബാംഗ്ലൂറിലെ ധർമ്മാരാം കോളേജിലായിരുന്നു.

മേജർ സെമിനാരിയിലെ ആദ്യ മാസ ധ്യാനത്തിനു ശേഷം 1975 ജൂലൈ പതിമൂന്നാം തീയതി മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശൻ ഡയറിയിൽ കുറിച്ച 5 പ്രതിജ്ഞകൾ ഏവർക്കും പ്രചോദനകരമാണ്.

1) ധ്യാനവും സുകൃതജപങ്ങളും വഴി ദൈവസാന്നിധ്യ സ്മരണ പുലർത്താൻ ശ്രമിക്കും, ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ സന്ദർശനം കൂടുതൽ നടത്തും.

2) ഒരു നിമിഷം പോലും നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്താതെ ഫലപ്രദമായി ചെലവഴിക്കും.

3) ഈശോയോടും സ്വർഗ്ഗീയ അമ്മയോടും കൂടുതൽ വിശ്വസ്തനായിരിക്കും.

4) കടമകൾ ധീരതയോടെ നിർവ്വഹിക്കും.

5) കൂട്ടുകാരോട് കൂടുതൽ സൗഹാർദ്ദത കാണിക്കും, പ്രസന്നവദനനായിരിക്കും.

1980 ജൂൺ മാസത്തിൽ ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര പഠനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശൻ്റെ ജീവിതാദർശം “സഹനപൂർവ്വം പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുക,” എന്നതായിരുന്നു.

1981 ജനുവരി ആരംഭത്തിൽ കറോയപ്പട്ടം സ്വീകരിക്കുവാൻ സഹപാഠികൾക്കൊപ്പം ആലുവായ്ക്കു പുറപ്പെടുവാനിരുന്ന മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശനെ അസഹ്യമായ നടുവുവേദനയെ തുടർന്ന് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലുള്ള സെൻ്റ് ജോൺസ് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചു. ആശുപത്രിയിൽ വച്ച് ശക്തമായ പനി, ന്യൂമോണിയ, മഞ്ഞപ്പിത്തം, കരൾ സംബന്ധമായ രോഗം എന്നിവയാൻ ആരോഗ്യം ക്ഷയിച്ചു. രോഗാവസ്ഥ ഗുരുതരമായ മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശൻ്റെ പാവനാത്മാവ് 1981 ജനുവരി 25-ാം തീയതി സ്വർഗ്ഗീയ ഭവനത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്രയായി.

ജനുവരി 27-ാം തീയതി മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ മങ്കുഴിക്കരിപ്പിതാവിൻ്റെ മുഖ്യ കാർമ്മികത്വത്തിൽ മൃതസംസ്കാര ശുശ്രൂഷകൾ ആലുവായിലുള്ള MCBS ജനറലേറ്റിൽ നടന്നു.

ധർമ്മരാമിൽ സെമിനാരിയിൽ കാരികുന്നേൽ ശെമ്മാശൻ്റെ ഗുരുവായിരുന്ന ബഹുമാനപ്പെട്ട തോമസ് കാലായിൽ CMI അച്ചൻ മാത്യു ശെമ്മാശനെ പറ്റി പറയുന്നത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്

“ലില്ലി പുഷ്പം ഒരു ദിവസം മാത്രം ജീവിക്കുന്നു. എങ്കിലും അതിൻ്റെ അഴകും ശോഭയും സൗരഭ്യവും നമ്മെ ആകർഷിക്കുകയും സന്തോഷിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ അതിൻ്റെ ജീവിതം ധന്യമായി തീരുന്നു. ബ്രദർ മാത്യുവിന്റെ ചുരുങ്ങിയ ജീവിതം ഒരു ലില്ലി പുഷ്പത്തിന്റെ അതുപോലെ അഴകുള്ളതും ശോഭയുള്ളതും സുരഭിലവുമായിരുന്നു.ചുരുങ്ങിയ കാലം കൊണ്ട് ജീവിതത്തിൽ പൂർണ്ണത നേടിയതിനാൽ നിത്യ സമ്മാനം പ്രാപിക്കുവാൻ ഈ കൊച്ചു സഹോദരൻ അതിവേഗം വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. എങ്കിലും ഉത്തമ സന്യാസിയും മാതൃക വൈദിക വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയും ആയിരുന്ന മാത്യുവിന്റെ വേർപാടിൽ അധികഠിനമായ ഹൃദയവേദന ഞാൻ അനുഭവിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ കണ്ണിൽ നിന്നും മറിഞ്ഞുവെങ്കിലും വേർപെടുത്താൻ കഴിയാത്തവിധത്തിൽ ഒരു കാവൽമാലാഖയെപ്പോലെ മാത്യു എന്നോടൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടെന്നും എൻ്റെ ആവശ്യങ്ങളിൽ സ്വർഗീയമായി എന്നെ സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും എനിക്ക് ബോധ്യമായിരിക്കുന്നു.”
