Cyriac was born on 2nd July 1932 in the Elangoi parish in the then Diocese of Changanassery. His parents were Mathew and Elizabeth Illickal. He did his primary education at Elangoi School. He completed his High School studies at Ponkunnam. He has been gifted with musical talent. Later the family migrated to Thirumeni in Kannur district. His elder brother, Fr.Mathew had been a diocesan priest. Sr. Seliguarine has been his youngest sister in the FCC Congregation.

In May, 1951, Cyriac joined mcbs congregation with the intention of becoming a religious priest. After the initial year of formation he was promoted to the novitiate. Fr. Romulus CMI has been his novice master. At the end of the canonical year of novitiate, Cyriac, along with his companions, made his religious profession on 10th May 1953. Then he was sent to diocesan minor seminary at. Changanassery for further study and formation. He has been so smart in academics that the superiors even thought of sending him to Rome for his future studies. But it did not work out that way for some reason. He did his study of philosophy and theology at the major seminary in Aluva. He was ordained as priest on 12th March 1961.

As a priest, Fr. Cyriac’s first appointment was to serve as procurator at the MCBS Study House at Karukunnu, Aluva, which has been under construction. He also enjoyed helping out in the neighbouring parishes in pastoral ministry. Later he served as the spiritual director and teacher at the Minor Seminary for a long period. He has also served as superior of the mcbs communities at Karimpany, Pious Mount, Kombayar and Sophia Ashram. He has been an inspiring and powerful retreat preacher. He has been very actively involved in the Charismatic movement and has preached retreats all over Kerala.

One day in January 1991, while serving as superior of Sophia Ashram and manager of A. J. John Memorial School, Fr. Cyriac experienced acute and unbearable pain in the stomach. Local hospital and the doctors could not offer any relief. Hence he was admitted at Lisie Hospital, Ernakulum. After various tests and investigations the doctors came to the assumption that his liver might be affected with cancer, and proposed a surgery. On 23rd February the surgery took place and the doctors affirmed that Fr. Cyriac has been going through an advanced stage of liver cancer. He was discharged from the hospital by 6th March as the surgical wound has been healed. No further treatment or medicines were provided, except some pain killers. Then some homeopathic treatment was tried, but was not effective. When his pain became almost unbearable and the condition turned worse he was admitted at the Samaritan Hospital, Pzhanganad on 30th March. Times when pain has been less he would appear cheerful and start his usual light-hearted conversation. Once when the superior general visited him and enquired about his pain he turned his eyes to the crucifix on the opposite wall and said in a low voice, “compared to what He has gone through, mine is nothing.” He was able to sublimate even his acute pain. While at the hospital he has been very particular that a priest of the congregation was by him always.

By 5th April Fr. Cyriac’s health condition became worse. On the following day the superior general administered the sacrament of anointing. Very consciously and devoutly he participated in the prayer service. At the end he said, “You may need assist me for ten more days.” His condition turned worse and worse day by day, and on 16th April, at 10:15 in the morning, Fr. Cyriac Illickel breathed his last in the Lord.

Funeral service for Fr. Cyriac Illickel took place on 17th April 1991 at MCBS Generalate. The ceremonies started at 9:30 with concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by the superior general and participated by many priests, seminarians, sisters, friends and relatives of Fr. Illickel. Fr Thomas Edayal gave a very touching homily. The final part of the funeral service was officiated by Bishop George Punnakkottil of Kothamangalam diocese.

Fr. Cyriac’s cheerful nature, love for the community, readiness to accept pain and sufferings without complaining, fostering of vocations etc. are a few of his virtues that can be emulated.

സഭയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ കാനോനിക നൊവിഷ്യേറ്റു ബാച്ചിലെ അംഗം.

കർമ്മലീത്താക്കാരനും വിശുദ്ധ അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയുടെ കുമ്പസാരക്കാരനുമായിരുന്ന
ബഹു . റോമുളൂസച്ചനായിരുന്നു നവസന്യാസ ഗുരു.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യമിഷനറി സഭയിൽ നിന്നും ആദ്യമായി ഒരു വൈദിക വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയെ റോമിൽ അയച്ചു പഠിപ്പിക്കാനായി അന്നത്തെ സുപ്പീരിയർ ജനറലായിരുന്ന ബ. പറേടത്തിലച്ചൻ പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇല്ലിക്കൽ ശെമ്മാശനായിരുന്നു അതിനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. ഏതോ കാരണത്താൽ ആ പരിശ്രമം വിജയിച്ചില്ല.

വൈദികനായശേഷം സഭ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദ്യം ഏല്പിച്ചത് സ്റ്റഡി ഹൗസിലെ വൈദിക വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ ചുമതലയാണ്. സഭയുടെ മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകനും ആത്മനിയന്താവുമായി ദീർഘകാലം സിറിയക്കച്ചൻ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു. ചാത്തൻകോട്ടുനട, കരിമ്പാനി, ചെമ്പേരി, കോമ്പയാർ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ആശ്രമ ശ്രേഷ്ഠനായും ബ. ഇല്ലിക്കലച്ചൻ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നല്ല ഗായകനും ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗകനുമായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം. കുറിക്കു കൊള്ളുന്ന പദ പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും നർമ്മോക്തികളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതയായിരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ കരിസ്മാറ്റിക് ധ്യാനരീതി തുടങ്ങിയ കാലത്ത് അതിൽ ആകൃഷ്ടനായ സിറിയക്കച്ചൻ കേരളത്തിലങ്ങോളമിങ്ങോളം നിരവധി ധ്യാനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ചാത്തൻകോട്ടുനട സോഫിയാ ആശ്രമത്തിന്റെ സുപ്പീരിയറും ഹൈസ്കൂൾ മാനേജരുമായി ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്ന കാലയളവിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ലിവർ ക്യാൻസർ സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നത്.

“അച്ചൻമാർ ആരെങ്കിലും എപ്പോഴും എന്റെ കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കണമെന്ന “ആഗ്രഹം എന്നാളും അദ്ദേഹം പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന ആത്മബന്ധത്തിന്റെ പ്രകാശനമാണ്.
“എല്ലാ വേദനയും സഹിക്കാം. നിങ്ങളെന്നോടു യാത്ര പറയുന്നതുമാത്രം താങ്ങാനാവുന്നില്ല” എന്ന വാക്കുകളിൽ നിഴലിക്കുന്നതും സുദൃഢമായ വ്യക്തിബന്ധങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൽ ഇഴപാകി നിന്നിരുന്നുവെന്നസത്യമാണ്.

സതീർത്ഥ്യനും നാട്ടുകാരനുമായ ചാവനാലിൽ ബ. ജോർജ്ജ് അച്ചൻ ബ. ഇല്ലിക്കലച്ചനെപ്പറ്റി എഴുതിയ അനുസ്മരണത്തിൽ ഇപ്രകാരം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു:

” സിറിയക്കച്ചൻ ഒരിക്കലും തനിക്കിഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട കർമ്മഭൂമികൾ തേടിപ്പോയില്ല. ഏല്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടവയിൽ തന്റെ ഭാഗം നന്നായി ചെയ്തു. ഫലത്തെപ്പറ്റി അദ്ദേഹം ഉൽക്കണ്ഠാകുലനായിരുന്നില്ല. അധികാരിയുടെയും അദ്ധ്യാപകന്റെയും ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികോപദേഷ്ടാവിന്റെയും അനുസരണം അഭ്യസിക്കുന്ന സന്യാസിയുടെയും മണ്ഡലങ്ങളിൽ നിഷക്കാമകർമ്മ നിരതനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. “

അന്ത്യനാളുകളിലെ കഠിന വേദനയുടെ നിമിഷങ്ങളിലും അച്ചൻ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച വിശ്വാസവും സമചിത്തതയും സഹനസന്നദ്ധതയും പ്രസന്നതയും പാവങ്ങളോടുള്ള താല്പര്യവും ദൈവവിളി പരിപോഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലുള്ള ശ്രദ്ധയും അനുകരണീയമാണ്.
