Varghese (Joby) Thayyil was born on 1st April 1972 at Vaisyambhagam, near Chambakulam in Alappuzha District. His parents were Thomas and Eliamma Thayyil and they belonged to St. Antony’s parish, Vaisyambhagam, in the Archdiocese of Changanassery. He had three brothers and two sisters. Sr. Anitha and Sr. Santhi are nuns in the Holy Spirit congregation. He had his high school education at Chambakulam. Early on he had the desire to be a priest and serve the people. After the successful completion of high school studies, Joby Thayyil joined the Minor Seminary, Lisieux, Athirampuzha on 11th  June 1988. On completion of the minor seminary formation he was admitted to the novitiate which commenced on 16th May 1991. Fr. Abraham Moloparambil has been the novice master. He made his first religious profession on 17th May 1992.

Joby Thayyil had his major seminary studies at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva; during those years he has been staying at MCBS Study House, Karukunnu, and going through the formation that was helpful to the young religious to grow in their commitment according to the charism of the congregation. During the study of Philosophy, he was also able to obtain graduation from the Mahatma Ghandi University. He had his regency at the Novitiate House, Podimattam. He did his study of Theology at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary. He was ordained priest on 1st January 2000, by Bishop George Alencherry of Thakala. Fr. Joby Thayyil’s first assignment was to do ministry in the Satara- Solapur Mission, Maharashtra. After three years he was given opportunity to study and obtain MSW from Sreedevi Institute, Mangalore. Then he served at Karimpany Ashram for some time. Later he served at Mother Theresa Home, Nedumkunnam, for one year. Then he served as parish priest first at Mundanthanam, and then at Kandamkari, and also at Thayankari. Later he served as a member at the Sneha Theeram Ashram, Cherthala and also at the Holy Family Ashram, Anikkadu. Then he was offered an opportunity for pastoral ministry in the USA, at Holy Family Parish, Warton. Due to certain health issues, Fr. Joby Thayyil had to end his ministry in the U. S. and return to India after two years. Then he was appointed to render his service at Divyahrudyashram, Chennaipara, where his service has been well appreciated by the inmates. But his health issues were worrisome. In February 2015 he was transferred to Emmaus Provincial House, so that he could undergo necessary medical check-up and specialised treatment.

Fr. Thayyil has been suffering from kidney disease, and the doctors proposed to have regular dialysis. But he was much reluctant to go through such an expensive treatment. Instead he has been ready for homeopathic treatment and acupuncture, which were not very helpful. He had to go through long days of pain and sufferings. In the midst of sufferings and pain he found relief reflecting on the passion and sufferings of Jesus Christ. He

has been convinced that only the Lord could heal him. Whenever possible he would spent long hours before the Eucharistic Lord, seeking relief from pain. As his health condition turned worse, he was admitted in the Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, on 29th May 2017. According to the doctors his condition has been very critical, and he was administered the sacrament anointing. Fr. Joby Thayyil breathed his last in the Lord, by 11 a.m. on 1st June 2017.

The funeral service for Fr. Varghese Thayyil was on 3rd June 2017 at the Emmaus Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. On the previous evening Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Powathil, Abraham Mar Julies of Muvattupuzha, priests and faithful from the parishes where he had served, payed homage to and prayed for Fr. Thayyil. The first part of the funeral service was officiated by the provincial superior and assisted by his councillors. The second part of the service was officiated by the provincial superior of Zion Province. This was followed by the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided by the superior general, assisted by the provincial superiors and priests, and attended by many religious sisters, laity, friends and relatives of Fr. Thayyil. Fr. Joy Chenchery, a classmate of Fr. Thayyil, preached a very touching homily. The concluding part of the service was officiated by Bishop Mathew Arackel of Kanjirappally.

Zealous devotion to the Eucharist, truthfulness, spirit of service, upright personality, missionary spirit etc. are a few of Fr. Thayyil’s virtues that are to be appreciated and emulated.
