Joy Parackel was born on 2nd August 1951 at Karimpany near Mattakara in the Diocese of Pala. His parents were Thomas and Mariam Parackel. His baptismal name has been Joseph. He has been the third of the five siblings, Kurian and Sr. Grace FCC elder to him and Fr. Thomas and Francis younger to him. He had his primary education at Holy Family L.P. School and high school studies at St. Aloysius High School, Manalinkal. His home being close to Karimpany Ashram, early on he started to assist at Holy Mass. He must have been attracted by the life and ministry of the inmates of the Ashram, especially of Fr. Mathew Alakalam, the founder of the MCBS, and upon completion of his high school studies, he decided to join the MCBS.

On 10th June 1968 he joined the Minor Seminary at Lisieux Ashram. After one year the seminary was shifted to the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. He had his novitiate during 1970-71, and his novice master has been Fr. Mathew Kanippillil. He made his first Religious Profession on 17th May 1971.

He had his Major seminary formation at MCBS Study House, Karukunnu. He did his study of philosophy at Camelgiri Seminary and theology at Mangalapuzha Seminary. He received his priestly ordination on 14th March 1978 from Bishop Sebastian Mankuzhikary of Ernakulam Archdiocese.

Fr. Joy Parackel’s first assignment was to render his service as a pioneer missionary in the newly established MCBS Shimoga Mission in Karnataka. On 24th June 1978, the civil district of Shimoga, which has been under the jurisdiction of Mananthavady, was officially entrusted to the MCBS for pastoral care and evangelisation ministry. Fr. Joy Parackel was the first one to reach there and begin the ministry. His initial task was to identify the isolated pockets of migrant Christians from Kerala and render pastoral care. Through his strenuous effort he managed to identify places like Anavatty, Nagavally, Ripponpett, Shimoga city, Induvally, Sagar and Masthikette as prospective Mission Centres and start rendering pastoral care.

Meantime he got an opportunity to participate in the Community Health Training Course organised by St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore. He was able to render remarkable service in the mission stations at Nagavally, Ripponpett, Masthikatte and Sagar. After nine years of sincere service in the Shimoga Mission he returned to Kerala.

In 1988 he was assigned to pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Changanassery. He rendered service as parish priest at Chennamkary and Karuvatta. In 1995 he took charge as the superior of Thiruhrudaya Ashram, Chennaippara. Next, he was granted permission to do higher studies in Philippines. He did his licentiate studies on ‘Church of St. Thomas Christians’ at the St. Thomas University, Manila. On his return, he was assigned to do ministry in the Archdiocese of Lanciano-Ortona, Italy.

In 2001 he returned to India, and was assigned to do ministry in the Satara-Solapur Mission in Maharashtra.

In 2004 he returned to Kerala, and rendered his service as parish priest at Kottankal in the Archdiocese of Changanassery. During 2006-2010 he served in the parishes of Nirmalgiri, Kumily, and Elivalikara in the Diocese of Kanjirappally. In 2010 he was appointed as superior of Holy Family Ashram, Anickad. In 2015 he was transferred as member of Emmaus House, Thiruvananthapuram. Later he served as parish priest at Pallenthuruth in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam.

Then, in 2018 he was transferred as member to MCBS House, Puthuvely. By then he has been suffering from a number of health issues related to kidney and liver. In order to have appropriate medical treatment he was transferred first to the Provincial House, and then to Casa Fratteli. He had his medical treatment at S.H.Medical Centre, Kottayam and at Mar Sleeva Medicity, Cherpumkal.

Even in the midst of severe pain and ailments he strived to be joyful and not to miss the community. By 18th July 2022, his condition became worse, and he admitted in the ICU at SH Medical Centre. By 10th August 2022Fr. Joy’s condition turned critical, and the provincial superior administered the sacrament of anointing. By 10 p.m. his condition became very critical and he breathed hi last in the Lord.

The funeral service for Fr. Joy Parackel was on 13th August 2022 at Emmaus Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. The first part of the service was officiated by the Provincial Superior and assisted by his councillors. Following the service the casket was carried in procession to the Little Flower parish church. Kaduvakulam. Many priests, religious sisters, laity, friends and relatives payed homage to and prayed for Fr. Joy. The second part of the service was officiated by Bishop Thomas Tharayil of Changanassery, and assisted by the mcbs batch mates of Fr. Joy. This was followed by the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by the Superior General and assisted by the superior general, provincial superiors, Fr. Thomas Parackel and a good many mcbs priests. Fr. Jacob Manampuram MCBS, a batch mate of Fr. Joy, gave a touching homily, high lighting the life and ministry of Fr. Joy Parackel. Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt of Pala officiated the concluding part of the funeral service. The provincial superior and Fr. Thomas Parackel thanked the participants of the service.

Fr. Joy Parackel has been a calm and quiet person; he avoided all kinds of luxuries and lavishness; he loved a life of simplicity. His love for the missions and zeal for pastoral ministry have been remarkable. He has been a person of prayer, and giving due importance to the values of religious life.

ശാന്തനും സൗമ്യനുമായ ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറിയായിരുന്നു ഫാ. ജോയി പാറയ്ക്കൽ, ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭാപിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ മാതൃകാപരമായ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ആകൃഷ്ടനായി സന്യാസം സ്വീകരിച്ചയാൾ, എം സി ബി എസ്-ൽ ചേരും മുമ്പേ എം സി ബി എസ് നെ സ്നേഹിച്ചയാൾ, സമാനതകളില്ലാത്ത മിഷൻ പ്രവർത്തന ശൈലിക്ക് ഉടമയായ മിഷനറി, ഷിമോഗാ മിഷന്റെ ശിൽപികളിലൊരാൾ, നിരവധി ഇടവകകളിലെ അജപാലകൻ, ശാന്തനായ സമർപ്പിതൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിവിധ വിശേഷണങ്ങളാൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്താവുന്ന ജീവിതമായിരുന്നു പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ജോയി അച്ചന്റേത്.

എം സി ബി എസ് സന്യാസ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപക പിതാക്കന്മാരുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധം പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന ജോയി അച്ചൻ, സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനു ശേഷം MCBS -ൽ തന്നെ ചേരാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

ഫാ. മാത്യു കണിപ്പള്ളിയുടെ കീഴിൽ നവസന്യാസ പരിശീലനം നടത്തി.

1978 മാർച്ച് 14-ന് ആലുവാ സ്റ്റഡി ഹൗസിൽ വച്ച് അഭിവന്ദ്യ മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ മങ്കുഴിക്കരി പിതാവിൻ്റെ കൈവയ്പു ശുശ്രൂഷവഴി ജോയി അച്ചൻ പൗരോഹിത്യത്തിലേക്ക് ഉയർത്തപ്പെട്ടു.

ഷിമോഗ മിഷൻ 1978-ൽ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിന് രണ്ടാഴ്ച മുമ്പേ ജോയി അച്ചൻ അവിടെയെത്തി പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ ഷിമോഗ മിഷനിലെ ആദ്യ മിഷനറിമാരിൽ ഒരാളായി അദ്ദേഹം മാറി.

ഫാ. തോമസ് പട്ടേരിയുമൊത്ത് ഇടുവള്ളി എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് താമസിച്ച്, ഷിമോഗ ജില്ലയിൽ മലയാളികളുള്ള മറ്റു കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുക എന്ന വലിയ ദൗത്യമായിരുന്നു ജോയി അച്ചന്റെ മുമ്പിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് കാളവണ്ടിയിലും കാൽനടയായും പുതിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്താൻ അദ്ദേഹം തീഷ്ണമായി പരിശ്രമിച്ചു.. പിന്നീട് യാത്ര ഒരു മോട്ടോർ സൈക്കിളിലായിരുന്നു ഷിമോഗയുടെ ഉൾപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ആടുകളെ തേടിയിറങ്ങിയ ഒരു നല്ല ഇടയനായിരുന്നു ജോയി അച്ചൻ. കന്നട ഭാഷയിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രാവീണ്യം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ യാത്രകൾക്ക് കരുത്തേകി.

1978 മുതൽ 1987 വരെയുള്ള ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലായിരുന്നു ഷിമോഗ മിഷനിലെ ആനവട്ടി, നാഗവള്ളി, റിപ്പൺപെട്ട, ഷിമോഗ, ഇൻഡുവള്ളി, സാഗർ, മസ്തിക്കട്ടെ എന്നീ മിഷൻ സെന്ററുകൾ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. ഷിമോഗ മിഷന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിലെ അച്ചന്റെ അദ്ധ്വാനം, എംസിബിഎസ്-ന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ സമാനതകളില്ലാത്ത മിഷനറി ചൈതന്യത്തിന്റെ സാക്ഷ്യമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.

1988-ൽ ജോയി അച്ചൻ ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി അതിരൂപതയിലെ ചേന്നംകരി പള്ളിയിൽ അജപാലന
ശുശ്രൂഷക്കായി നിയമിതനായി.

1991-ൽ ചങ്ങനാശേരി അതിരൂപതയിലെതന്നെ കരുവാറ്റ പള്ളിയിൽ വികാരിയായി.

1996-ൽ ചെന്നായപ്പാറ ദിവ്യഹൃദയാശ്രമത്തിലെ സുപ്പീരിയറായി.

1997-ൽ ഫിലിപ്പൈൻസിൽ ഉപരിപഠനത്തിനുപോയ ജോയി അച്ചൻ മനിലയിലെ സെന്റ് തോമസ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ നിന്നും തിയോളജിയിൽ ലൈസൻഷ്യേറ്റ് കരസ്ഥമാക്കി. അതിനു ശേഷം 2000-2001 വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ഇറ്റലിയിലെ ഓർത്തോണയായിരുന്നു അച്ചൻ്റെ അടുത്ത കർമ്മഭൂമി.

2001-ൽ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ അച്ചൻ, 2004 വരെ സത്താറ സോളാപ്പൂർ മിഷനിലെ ലോനന്ദിലും 2004 മുതൽ 2006 വരെ ചങ്ങനാശേരി അതിരൂപതയിലെ കോട്ടാങ്കലും 2008 മുതൽ 2010 വരെ കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളി രൂപതയിലെ നിർമ്മലഗിരി, കുമളി, എലിവാലിക്കര എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു.

2010 മുതൽ 2015 വരെ ആനിക്കാട് ഹോളി ഫാമിലി ആശ്രമത്തിന്റെ സുപ്പീരിയറായിരുന്നു.

2015-2016 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ തിരുവനന്തപുരം എമ്മാവൂസ് ഹൗസിലും തുടർന്ന് എറണാകുളം-അങ്കമാലി അതിരൂപതയിലെ പല്ലാതുരുത്ത് ഇടവകയിലും അച്ചൻ തന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷകൾ തുടർന്നു.

2018-ൽ ജോയി അച്ചൻ പുതുവേലി എംസിബിഎസ് ഹൗസിലെ അംഗമായി. അപ്പോഴേക്കും വിവിധ രോഗങ്ങൾ അച്ചനെ അലട്ടിത്തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. കിഡ്നി, കരൾ സംബന്ധമായ അസുഖമായിരുന്നു അച്ചനെ വലച്ചിരുന്നത്. മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ചികിത്സക്കും വിശ്രമത്തിനുമായി ആദ്യം എമ്മാവൂസ് പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യൾ ഹൗസിലേക്കും പിന്നീട് കാസാ ഫ്രത്തേലിയിലേക്കും അച്ചൻ എത്തി.

വിവിധ രോഗങ്ങളുടെയും വേദനകളുടേതുമായിരുന്നു അച്ചന്റെ അന്തിമകാലമെങ്കിലും സ്വാഭാവികമായ ശാന്തതയും പുഞ്ചിരിയും അദ്ദേഹം കൈവിട്ടില്ല. സമൂഹത്തിലെ പൊതു പ്രാർത്ഥനാവേളകളും ഭക്ഷണവേളകളും അദ്ദേഹം ഒരിക്കലും ഒഴിവാക്കുമായിരുന്നില്ല. മറ്റു വൈദികരുമായും ബ്രദേഴ്സുമായും ജോലിക്കാരുമായും നല്ല ബന്ധം പുലർത്താൻ അദ്ദേഹം എപ്പോഴും ശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു. സഭയുടെ വളർച്ചയെക്കുറിച്ചും വിവിധ കർമ്മ രംഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും അദ്ദേഹം സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നു.

2022 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 10-ന് അച്ചന്റെ ആരോഗ്യാവസ്ഥ മോശസ്ഥിതിയിൽ എത്തിയെന്ന് ആശുപത്രി അധികൃതർ അറിയിച്ചതിനാൽ വൈകിട്ട് നാലു മണിയോടെ പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യാളച്ചൻ

മണിയോടെ ജോയി അച്ചൻ നിത്യതയിലേക്ക് യാത്രയായി.

ബഹു. ജോയി പാറയ്ക്കൽ അച്ചന്റെ 72 വർഷങ്ങൾ നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ഈ ഭൂമിയിലെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ 52 വർഷങ്ങൾ സന്യാസജീവിതത്തിലൂടെയും 44 വർഷങ്ങൾ പൗരോഹിത്യജീവിതത്തിലൂടെയും അദ്ദേഹം ദൈവത്തെ മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തി, സഭാ സ്ഥാപകരുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധം പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിൽ ആലക്കളം അച്ചൻ്റെ പ്രേഷിതചൈതന്യവും പറേടം അച്ചൻ്റെ അജപാലന ചൈതന്യവും നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നിരുന്നു.

ആരവങ്ങളോ, ആഡംബരങ്ങളോ ഇല്ലാതെ ശാന്തമായും നിശബ്ദമായും അദ്ദേഹം ഈ ഭൂമിയിൽ ജീവിച്ചു. ഒടുവിൽ നിശബ്ദസഹനത്തിലൂടെ ഈ ഭൂമിയിലെ തന്റെ ദൗത്യം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി അദ്ദേഹം കടന്നുപോയി. ഏങ്കിലും ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സന്യാസ സമുഹത്തിലെ മഹാമിഷനറിമാരുടെ ഗണത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേര് എക്കാലവും ആദ്യ നിരയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും.
