FINDING MEANING IN SUFFERING
Why does God allow good people to suffer?
It’s one of the oldest and most difficult questions ever asked.
If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t He stop every illness, every tragedy, every heartbreak?
Perhaps one place to begin is at the foot of the Cross.
Think about this: if God allowed His own Mother to suffer, why would we expect to be completely spared from suffering ourselves?
Mary was the most blessed of all women, yet she endured one of the deepest pains imaginable—the death of her Son.
Standing beneath the Cross on Good Friday, she watched Jesus suffer and die.
God could have prevented that suffering.
But He didn’t.
Why?
Because sometimes God’s greatest works come through suffering, even when we cannot see it at the moment.
There would be no Easter Sunday without Good Friday.
No Resurrection without the Crucifixion.
The famous Pietà captures this mystery perfectly: a grieving mother holding the lifeless body of her Son. It reminds us that suffering is real, painful, and often difficult to understand. Yet it also reminds us that suffering is not the end of the story.
Whether your pain is physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial, God sees it.
He has not abandoned you.
And your suffering is not meaningless.
Sometimes suffering brings us back to prayer.
Sometimes it softens our hearts and teaches us compassion.
Sometimes it reminds us how precious life is and how deeply we need God.
It teaches us to forgive more quickly.
To love more deeply.
To spend more time with those we cherish.
To focus less on things that do not matter and more on what lasts forever.
We may never fully understand why certain crosses are placed on our shoulders.
But we can trust that God is able to bring good even from the darkest moments.
If you are carrying a heavy burden today, look at the Cross.
Look at Mary.
Look at the Pietà.
Remember that our Blessed Mother understands your pain.
Remember that Christ walks with you in your suffering.
And remember this:
God’s love is greater than any cross you carry.
Trust Him.
You are not alone.
