PROPER DISPOSITION BEFORE MASS For Liturgical Music Ministers
Before serving at Mass, liturgical music ministers should prepare not only their voices and instruments but also their hearts and minds. Sacred music is a ministry, not merely a performance.
1. ARRIVE EARLY
Come to church with sufficient time to prepare, review the music, and recollect yourself in prayer. Avoid rushing into the liturgy.
2. PRAY BEFORE SERVING
Entrust your ministry to God and ask for the grace to serve with humility, reverence, and charity.
3. OBSERVE REVERENT SILENCE
Maintain a prayerful atmosphere before Mass. Excessive talking, joking, and unnecessary noise can distract both ministers and worshippers from preparing for the sacred mysteries.
4. BE PROPERLY ATTIRED
Dress modestly, neatly, and according to parish guidelines, remembering that liturgical ministers serve in a sacred setting.
5. EXAMINE YOUR INTENTIONS
Ask yourself: “Am I singing for God’s glory and the sanctification of the faithful, or for personal recognition?” The goal of liturgical music is worship, not performance.
6. BE SPIRITUALLY PREPARED
Whenever possible, be in a state of grace and approach your ministry with a sincere desire to encounter Christ in the liturgy.
7. FOSTER UNITY
Avoid conflicts, gossip, resentment, or divisions among fellow ministers. Seek reconciliation and cultivate mutual respect and charity.
8. LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD
Prepare to participate fully in the Mass by listening attentively to the readings and prayers, not only to the music.
9. REMEMBER YOUR MINISTRY
The music minister is first a worshipper before being a singer or instrumentalist. Active participation in the liturgy is more important than musical excellence alone.
10. OFFER YOUR SERVICE TO GOD
Before Mass begins, quietly pray:
“Lord, may my voice, my talents, and my service today give glory to You and help Your people pray more deeply. Amen.”
