The Young Saint of Purity, Forgiveness, and Heroic Holiness
Introduction
Among the saints of the Catholic Church, few have touched hearts as deeply as Saint Maria Goretti. Though she lived only eleven years, her extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, and remarkable spirit of forgiveness have inspired millions around the world. Canonized in 1950, she remains one of the youngest saints officially recognized by the Catholic Church.

Early Life
Maria Teresa Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, in the Marche region of Italy. She was the third of seven children born to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini Goretti, a deeply Catholic farming family.
Although materially poor, the Goretti family was rich in faith. Daily prayer, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and participation in the sacraments shaped Maria’s childhood. From a very young age she displayed remarkable kindness, obedience, and love for God.
A Family Marked by Poverty
The Goretti family struggled financially and moved several times in search of work. Eventually they settled near Nettuno, south of Rome, where Luigi worked as a sharecropper.
Life was difficult:
- The family lived in a small farmhouse.
- Every member contributed to daily work.
- Food was often scarce.
- Medical care was limited.
- Children assumed responsibilities beyond their years.
In 1900, tragedy struck when Maria’s father died of malaria. Only ten years old, Maria assumed many household responsibilities, caring for her younger siblings while her mother worked in the fields.
Despite these hardships, she remained cheerful and prayerful.
A Child Deeply in Love with God

The Serenelli Family
The Gorettis shared their farmhouse with another farming family—the Serenellis.
Among them was Alessandro Serenelli, a young man about twenty years old.
Unlike Maria, Alessandro had experienced a difficult childhood marked by neglect, exposure to immoral influences, and little religious formation. Over time he developed an unhealthy obsession with Maria.
She repeatedly rejected his inappropriate advances.
The Assault and Martyrdom
On July 5, 1902, while Maria’s mother was working in the fields, Alessandro attempted to force himself upon the eleven-year-old girl.
Maria resisted with all her strength.
She cried out:
“No! It is a sin. God does not want it.”
She feared not only for herself but also for Alessandro’s soul, warning him that such an act would offend God.
Enraged by her resistance, Alessandro stabbed Maria fourteen times with a knife before fleeing.
She was rushed to the hospital in Nettuno.
Her Final Hours
Doctors operated without anesthesia, as was common for emergency procedures at the time, but her injuries were too severe.
During her final hours, Maria displayed extraordinary peace.
A priest visited her and asked whether she forgave Alessandro.
She replied:
“Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him… and I want him to be with me in Heaven.”
These words have become one of the most powerful testimonies of Christian forgiveness in history.
The following day, July 6, 1902, Maria died after receiving Holy Communion.
She was only 11 years old.
Alessandro Serenelli’s Conversion
Perhaps the most remarkable chapter of Maria’s story occurred after her death.
Alessandro was convicted of murder and sentenced to thirty years in prison.
For years he remained angry, bitter, and unrepentant.
Then, several years into his imprisonment, he experienced a profound dream.
The Dream of Lilies
Alessandro later recounted that Maria appeared to him in a dream.
She was in a beautiful garden carrying fourteen white lilies, symbolizing the fourteen stab wounds she had suffered.
One by one she handed him the lilies.
As he accepted them, they transformed into white flames or blossoms—symbols of forgiveness and grace.
When he awoke, something within him had changed.
He repented sincerely, returned to the Catholic faith, confessed his sins, and became a model prisoner.
Seeking Forgiveness
After his release from prison in 1928, Alessandro traveled to ask forgiveness from Maria’s mother, Assunta Goretti.
It was Christmas.
He said:
“Maria has forgiven me. Will you forgive me too?”
Assunta replied:
“If my daughter forgave you, who am I to withhold forgiveness?”
Together they attended Midnight Mass and received Holy Communion.
This moment remains one of the most moving examples of Christian reconciliation.
A Life of Penance
Following his release, Alessandro entered the service of the Capuchin Franciscans as a lay brother and gardener. Though he did not become a priest or religious brother in vows, he lived quietly, prayerfully, and penitently for many years.
He often spoke publicly about Maria’s forgiveness and urged young people to avoid sin and embrace God’s mercy.
In later life he wrote:
“Maria was my light, my protector. With her help I conducted myself well and tried to live honestly.”
He died in 1970 after decades of faithful Christian living.
Beatification
Maria’s reputation for holiness spread rapidly.
Numerous miracles were attributed to her intercession.
She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 27, 1947.
More than 250,000 people attended the ceremony.
Canonization
On June 24, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared Maria Goretti a saint.
Her canonization was historic because:
- Her mother attended the ceremony.
- It was the first canonization where a saint’s parent was present.
- Nearly half a million pilgrims gathered in Rome.
The Pope described her as:
“The Saint Agnes of the twentieth century.”
