George Olickamala was born on 13th September 1934 at Monippally in Kottayam district. His parents were Paily and Anna Olickamala who belonged to the Mutholapuram parish in the Diocese of Pala. He was baptized on 20th September 1934 at the parish church in Mutholapuram. Later on the parish was bifurcated and they became members of Udayagiri parish. George had his primary and middle school education at the Government School and Holy Cross School, Monippally. He did his high school studies at St. Peter’s, Elanji, after which he joined the Minor Seminary in Ernakulam, which belonged to the Carmelite Order. After the study in the minor he could not carry on his formation there due to certain canonical regulation of the Order. Bro. George visited Fr. Joseph Paredom, a close relative, and explained his unprecedented situation. Fr. Paredom, as the superior general of the mcbs proposed to seek admission in the congregation if he was convinced of his vocation to religious life. Accordingly he joined the congregation.

As he had completed the minor seminary studies he was sent to St. Joseph’s Major Seminary, Mangalore, to pursue his studies and formation. During 1959-60 he had his novitiate in the mcbs. He made his religious profession on 25th May 1960. Then he continued his study of theology in Mangalore. He was ordained as priest on 3rd December 1963 by Rt. Rev. Longimur of Bombay Archdiocese.

Fr. George Olickmala’s first appointment was as a teacher at the Minor Seminary, Lisieux Ashram. He has been a good teacher and also a gifted preacher. He has had continued education on Counselling at Vellore and on Preaching at Roca de Papa Institute, Rome. He specialised on the Documents of Vatican II from Manila, Philippines. He made use of the opportunities to preach retreats inside and outside Kerala. Later he was appointed as the spiritual director of the major seminarians at Mcbs Study House, Aluva. In 1977 he was elected as one of the four General Councillors of the Mcbs.

Later he has been involved in pastoral ministry in the parishes of the dioceses of Thalasseri and Palakkad. He also served in the community at Pious Mount Ashram during which he has been very helpful in the neighbouring parishes. Then he opted for service in Shimoga Mission in Karnataka. There he has been very generous in assisting at various mission stations. Soon he became prey to various health issues and had to undergo treatment. He was hospitalised for some time and there has been considerable improvement. Hence he came back to the residence at Anavatty. In January 2004 the Provincial Superior visited him and there has been a long, cordial conversation between them. On 26th January his health condition became worse. That night he did have a massive heart attack and he breathed his last in the Lord.

Funeral service for Fr. George Olickamala was to be at Mcbs Generalate Chunangamvely, on 29th January 2004 and hence, his body had to be brought to Kerala. On the way there has been short prayer service at the Minor Seminary, Pariyaram, and at the Zion Provincial House, Kozhikode. Then the body was brought to his home-parish,  Udayagiri  near  Monipally.  Bishop  Joseph

Pallickaparabil of Pala visited, paid homage to and prayed for Fr. George. Later the body was brought to Mcbs Generalate for the funeral service. A few bishops, many priests and religious, large number of friends and relatives visited and paid homage to Fr. Olickamala. The funeral service commenced with the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by the Superior General and assisted by the provincial superiors. Fr. Jose Mulangattil preached the homily. The concluding part of the funeral service followed.

Deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist, firmness of ideology, love for the Word of God, missionary zeal, warmth of love etc. are a few of his exemplary virtues.

03-12-1963 ന് ബോംബേ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തയായിരുന്ന അഭിവദ്യ ലോങ്ങിമൂർ പിതാവിൽ നിന്നു പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ചു.

അതിരമ്പുഴ മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയായിരുന്നു പ്രഥമ പ്രവർത്തന രംഗം.വെല്ലൂരിൽ നിന്നു ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിങ്ങിലും റോമിൽ നിന്നു ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗത്തിലും ഉപരി പഠനം നേടിയിരുന്നു ജോർജ് അച്ചൻ.
വത്തിക്കാൻ കൗൺസിലിൻ്റെ പ്രമാണ രേഖകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അച്ചൻ്റെ ക്ലാസ്സുകൾ കേരളത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തും പ്രസിദ്ധമായിരുന്നു.

ആലുവായിലെ പഠനഗ്രഹത്തിൽ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക പിതാവായി ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ വ്യക്തിത്വ വികസനത്തിലൂടെ ആത്മീതയിൽ വളരാൻ വൈദിക വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ സഹായിച്ചു.

സഭയുടെ ജനറൽ കൗൺസിലറായും നവസന്യാസഭ ഭവനത്തിൻ സുപ്പീരിയറായും സ്തത്യുർഹമായ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്ത ജോർജ് അച്ചൻ തലശ്ശേരി, പാലക്കാട് രൂപതകളിലും ചെമ്പേരിയിലും ഷിമോഗാ മിഷനിലും ജോലി ചെയ്തട്ടുണ്ട്.

ആനവെട്ടിയിൽ വിശ്രമജീവിതം നയിച്ചു വരുമ്പോഴാണ് ജോർജച്ചൻ്റെ രോഗാവസ്ഥ വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നതും 2004 ജനവരി 27-ാം തീയതി സ്വർഗ്ഗീയ ഭവനത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ പോകുന്നതും.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ഭക്തി, ആദർശനിഷ്ഠ, വചനോപാസനാ, പ്രേഷിത തീഷ്ണത, ഊഷ്മള സ്നേഹം എന്നിവ ജോർജ് അച്ചനിൽ വിളങ്ങി ശോഭിച്ച സുകൃതങ്ങളാണ്.
