John Arackathottathil was born on 22nd January 1928 at Karimannoor in the Diocese of Kothamangalam. His parents were Augustine and Elisabeth Arackathottathil, and John was their eldest son. He had his primary education at St. Mary’s School, Karimannoor, and Middle School at St. Joseph’s, Karimannoor, and High School at the Government High School, Thodupuzha. Early on he had a liking for priestly ministry.

On 18th June 1950 he joined the MCBS as a seminarian. He was sent to the diocesan minor seminary, Parel, Changanassery for study and formation. He had his novitiate at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam from 15th May 1952, and Fr. Romulus CMI, the spiritual director of St. Alphonsa, has been his Novice Master. His

religious profession was 16th May 1953. He has been very imaginative and gifted with artistic talents. He has been a jovial person, and his presence made the community joyful. He had his major seminary studies and formation at Magalapuzha Seminary, Aluva. He has had ample opportunities to give expression to his artistic talents. He has been very exemplary and spiritually oriented. He was ordained as priest on 12th March 1960 by Bishop Mathew Pothanamoozhi of Kothamangalam.

Fr. John’s first assignment was as a member of Lisieux Ashram, Athirampuzha. He has been good at organising the youth in the locality for social activities. Next year he was asked to be involved in pastoral ministry at Puravayal in the diocese of Thalasseri. His deep love for Holy Eucharist had its impact on his style of ministry. Later he served as a member of Karimpany Ashram, where he took interest in organising the youth in the parish. Then he was asked to serve as parish priest in the parishes like Nadukkara, Vazhakala and Kaliyar.

From 1979 he has been in charge of St. Thomas Villa, Kompayar. He took interest in organising people and involving them in the activities aimed at the betterment of the area. He was instrumental for starting an aided U. P. School which helped providing better education to the students in the area. In 1985 he was transferred to Mcbs Generalate where he has been rendering pastoral help to the nearby parishes and religious communities. He also served in the parishes like Thirumudikunnu and Milampalli. During those years he has been suffering from certain health issues related to Asthma.

He was transferred to the Mcbs House, Anappara, so that he could have some rest and relaxation. But he would go out helping at the Retreat centres with confessions. His health has been deteriorating and was admitted in the L. F. Hospital, Angamaly. On 27th February his condition became worse and the Superior General administered the Sacrament of Anointing. On 29th February 2004 Fr. John Arackthottathil breathed his last in the Lord.

The funeral service for Fr. John Arackathottathil was on 3rd March 2004 at the Mcbs Emmaus Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. The service commenced with the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by the superior general, assisted bymany members of the congregation, and attended by many religious sisters and laity. The concluding part of the service was presided over by Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam of Changanassery and assisted by the Superior General and the Provincial Superiors.

Love for the Holy Eucharist, earnestness in pastoral ministry, simple life style, joyful nature, love for the poor etc. are a few of Fr. John’s virtues that are to be appreciated and emulates.

വി. അൽഫോൻസാമ്മയുടെ കുമ്പസാരക്കാരനായിരുന്ന ബഹു. റോമൂളൂ സച്ചനായിരുന്നു നവസന്ന്യാസ ഗുരു

കലാകായിക-സാംസ്ക്കാരിക വര മാനങ്ങളുമുള്ള വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു ജോണച്ചൻ നാടക രചന, ചിത്രകല എന്നിവയിലൊക്കെ നൈപുണ്യം നേടിയിരുന്നു.

വിശാലഹൃദയവും തുറന്ന മനസ്സുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നതിനാൽ വലിയവരേയും ചെറിയവരയുമൊക്കെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളാക്കാൻ അച്ചനു വേഗം കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

12-3-1960-ൽ മാർ മാത്യു പോത്തനാംമൂഴി പിതാവിൽ നിന്നു ശുശ്രൂഷാ പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ച ജോണച്ചൻ്റെ തന്റെ പ്രഥമ കർമ്മഭൂമി അതിരമ്പുഴ ലിസ്യു ആശ്രമമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ചെമ്പേരി ആശ്രമമായിരുന്നു പ്രവർത്തന രംഗം.

തുടർന്ന് തലശ്ശേരി രൂപതയിലെ പുറവയൽ, കരിമ്പാനി ആശ്രമം നടുകര, വാഴക്കാല, കാളിയാർ തുടങ്ങിയ ഇടവകളിൽ വികാരിയായി ജോണച്ചനൻ ശുശ്രൂഷചെയ്തു.

1979- മുതൽ കോമ്പായാർ ആശ്രമമായിരുന്നു ജോണച്ചന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനമേഖല. നാട്ടുകാരുടെ സഹായത്തോടുകൂടി റോഡുവെട്ടാനും യാത്ര സൗകര്യങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കാനും അച്ചൻ കിണഞ്ഞു പരിശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു.

വി. പൗലോസിന് ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരു മുള്ള് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതു പോലെ ആസ്മാരോഗം ജോണച്ചന് ഒരു മുള്ളായിരുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ശല്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നപ്പോഴും അടുത്തും അകലെയുമുള്ള പള്ളികളിൽ അതിരാവിലെ വി. കുർബാനയർപ്പിക്കാനും ധ്യാനമന്ദിരങ്ങളിൽ കുമ്പസാരിപ്പിക്കാനും കൃത്യമായി അച്ചൻ പോയിരുന്നു.

1985 മുതൽ കുറെക്കാലം ജനലറ്റിൽ താമസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അച്ചൻ സമീപപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് തിരുമുടികുന്ന്. മൈലംപള്ളി എന്നീ ഇടവകകളിൽ അച്ചൻ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു.

സമൂഹത്തിൽ ആരെയും എതിർക്കാതെയും എല്ലാവരെയും സ്നേഹിച്ചും ജീവിച്ച ജോണച്ചൻ “കർത്തൃദാസൻ കലഹപ്രിയനാ യിരിക്കരുത് ” എന്നുള്ള ദൈവവചനം അന്യൂനം കാത്തു പാലിച്ച വ്യക്തിയാണ്.
പ്രതിസന്ധികൾ ഉണ്ടായാൽ നിശ്ശബ്ദനായി രംഗത്തുനിന്നും പിൻവാങ്ങി പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ലളിതമായി കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യാൻ തക്ക നയചാതുരി അച്ചനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

ജീവിതസായാഹ്നത്തിൽ ജോണച്ചൻ ആനപ്പാറയിലുള്ള സഭാ ഭവനത്തിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. ഇക്കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ പല സന്യാസിനീ ഭവനങ്ങളിലും മാസധ്യാനത്തിനു സഹായിച്ചും അനുരജ്ഞന കൂദാശ പരികർമ്മം ചെയ്തും, ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികോപദേശങ്ങൾ നല്കിയും തന്റെ പൗരോഹിത്യ ശുശ്രൂഷ ഏറ്റം ഭംഗിയായി അച്ചൻ നിർവ്വഹിച്ചിരുന്നു.
