George Chavanalil was born on 24th August 1933 at Chamampathal in Kottayam district. His parents were Mani and Anna Chavanalil and they belonged to Elangoi parish in the diocese of Kanjirappally. George was baptised on 1st September 1933. Later the family migrated to Rayrom, in Kannur district.

Immediately following his High School education George joined the Mcbs Congregation on 24th August 1951. He had his initial formation at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. He started his novitiate along with the fifth batch of novices on 15th May 1952; Fr. Romulus CMI has been their novice master. Having identified the leadership quality of Bro. George, Fr. Master appointed him as the first leader of the batch. He has been very earnest in assimilating into his life the ideals, values and attitudes of religious life. Along with his co-novices, he made his religious profession on 16th May 1953. Then he was sent to the diocesan minor seminary at Changanassery for further studies. Later he was  sent to Mangalapuzha Seminary for major seminary studies and formation. He has been very clever at studies and a talented public speaker. While at Mangalapuzha he has been in charge of the S. H. League Publications. As a souvenir for his priestly ordination he authored a book in Malayalam entitled Velicham, Pinneyum Velcham. George Chavanalil was ordained as priest on March 12th 1961 by Archbishop Mathew Kavukatt.

Fr. Chavanalil’s first assignment was at Karimpany. He had a special talent at organizing the youth and involving them in social service activities. As a talented public speaker he got involved in the anti-communist movement initiated by Fr. Joseph Vadaken. In June 1962 he was transferred to Sophia Ashram Chathankotuunada. Later in April 1968, at the invitation of his classmate Fr. Joseph Akkarakaran, he agreed to work in association with the Better Life Movement. He helped editing a new Malayalam Bible prepared by Fr. Mathew Moothedam. In December 1969 he was appointed superior of Lisieux Ashram, Athirampuzha.

In December 1971 Fr. Chavanalil was elected as the First Councillor to the Superior General. In that position he was able to do a lot towards the progress of the congregation. In May 1973 he took charge of completing the construction of the novitiate house at Podimattam. He has been also instrumental for the purchase of land at Chunangamvely for the construction of Mcbs Generalate. He initiated the process for the purchase of some land in Bangalore for a study house. In December 1977 he was re-elected as general councillor. He was asked to carry on the land deal in Bangalore. But his efforts did not succeed and it resulted in considerable financial loss to the congregation. He felt very bad over what happened and he gave up his position as general councillor.

Later he was granted permission to do pastoral ministry in the newly erected diocese of Kanjirapally. The diocese made best use of his talents by entrusting the task of identifying suitable land for the diocesan minor seminary and overseeing the construction of the buildings. Later on he has been in pastoral ministry in the parishes like Kannimala and Koruthode. While he was at Koruthode he had some health issues. In a thorough medical check-up he was diagnosed of cancer. Early 1992 he moved to Mcbs Generalate and started with t r e a t m e n t a t t h e R e g i o n a l C a n c e r I n s t i t u t e i n Thiruvananthapuram. The treatment went on for over two years. By 24th May 1994 his condition became worse and was admitted at Samaritan Hospital, Pazhanganad. He had been experiencing severe pain, but accepted them courageously. By the evening of  24^th June Fr. George’s condition became very worse, and the superior general and his team visited him and administered the sacrament of anointing. By 11:10 pm on 24th June 1994, Fr. George uttered the prayer, “My Jesus; my Mother” and breathed his last in the Lord.

Fr. George Chavanalil’s funeral was at Mcbs Generalate on 26th June 1994. From the morning onwards many members of the mcbs, priests and sisters from neighbouring parishes and religious communities, and his friends and relatives arrived in large numbers to pay homage to and pray for the repose of his soul. The funeral service started in the afternoon by 1:30. Bishop Jacob Manathodath of Ernakulam officiated the service. Fr. George’s classmate at the seminary, Fr. Joseph Thachil gave a touching eulogy.

Fr. Chavanalil’s loving nature, mature relationship with everyone, joyful approach, hard work, studiousness, impartiality and leadership qualities are to be appreciated and imitated.

സെമിനാരിയിലെ പഠനകാലത്തുതന്നെ നലം തികഞ്ഞ പ്രസംഗകനായിരുന്നു ജോർജ്ജ് ശെമ്മാശൻ വാദപ്രതിവാദ സമ്മേളനങ്ങളിൽ പലപ്പോഴും മോഡറേറ്ററായിരുന്നു.

ലോക മതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കാൻ ജോർജ് ശെമ്മാശ്ശൻ വളരെ താല്പര്യം പ്രകടിച്ചിരുന്നു. പ്രസ്തുത പഠനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമാണ് പൗരോഹിത്യ സ്വീകരണ സ്മാരകമായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച “വെളിച്ചം, പിന്നെയും വെളിച്ചം ” എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം.

1961 മാർച്ച് മാസം 12-ാം തിയതി അഭിവന്ദ്യ കാവുകാട്ടു പിതാവിൽ നിന്നും ബഹു. ജോർജ് ശെമ്മാശൻ പൗരോഹിത്യം വീതിച്ചു.

അന്നത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രീയാന്തരീക്ഷം വളരെ പ്രക്ഷുബ്ധമായിരുന്നു. കമ്യൂണിസ്റ്റു മുന്നണി ശക്തിപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നതിനാൽ, കമ്യൂണിസ്റ്റു വിരുദ്ധ മുന്നണി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് കേരള രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റുപോലെ വർത്തിച്ച വടക്കനച്ചനോടൊപ്പം വാഴൂരച്ചൻ പലവേദികളിലും ഉജ്ജ്വലപ്രഭാഷനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

യുവജനങ്ങളെ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കാനും സാമൂഹിക സേവനരംഗത്ത് അവരെ കർമ്മനിരതരാക്കാനും അച്ചനു നല്ല പാടവമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

സമ്പൂർണ്ണ ബൈബിൾ മലയാളം പരിഭാഷ തയ്യാറാക്കാൻ ബഹു. മൂത്തേടത്തച്ചനൊടൊപ്പം വാഴൂരച്ചൻ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

1971 , 1977 എന്നീ പൊതു സംഘങ്ങളിൽ വാഴൂരച്ചൻ സുപ്പീരിയർ ജനറാളച്ചൻ്റെ ആലോചനാ സംഘാംഗമായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

ഷിമോഗ മിഷൻ സഭ ഏറ്റെടുത്തപ്പോൾ പ്രവർത്തന ക്ഷമതയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി സ്ഥാപിതമായ ശാന്തി നികേതൻ സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ കരടുരേഖകൾ രൂപപ്പെടുത്താൻ അച്ചന്റെ കുശാഗ്രബുദ്ധിക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു.

വ്യാഴവട്ടക്കാലം കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളി രൂപതയിൽ വാഴൂരച്ചൻ നിസ്തുല സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ധാരാളം കഴിവും സന്മനസ്സുമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അച്ചൻ രൂപതയുടെ മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയ്ക്ക് യോജിച്ച ഒരു സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്തി നിർമ്മാണത്തിനു നേതൃത്വം നല്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

കോരുത്തോട്ടിലെ ദൈവജന ശുശ്രൂഷ കുറെ കൂടെ ഉൽകൃഷ്ടമാണ്. അവിടെ പണിതീർത്തിരിക്കുന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഇടവക ദൈവാലയം, കുരിശുപള്ളി, സിമിത്തേരി എന്നിവ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നിസ്തുല പരിശ്രമത്തിന്റെ സ്മാരകമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
