Thomas Chittinappallil was born on 28th December 1937 at Edakunnu, in the parish of Paduvapuram, Ernakulam Archdiocese. His parents were Kochuvareedu and Thressia Chiitinappallil. He was the youngest of the nine siblings. He had his education at the schools at Edakunnu, Karukutty and Koratty. Early on he had the desire to join a religious community and serve the people. After completing his high school studies he joined the minor seminary of the Congregation for Missions in Orissa. He had very hard time passing the exams, and hence was asked to discontinue the studies there. But he did not give-up his idea of becoming a religious, and he approached the superiors of the MCBS, seeking admission, at least, to be a Brother Co-operator and was granted admission. He joined the MCBS on 5th April 1966 and he had his initial formation at the MCBS Study House, Karukunnu.

In May 1967, Thomas was admitted to the MCBS novitiate at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. Fr. Mathew Kanippillil has been the Novice Master. Thomas Chittinappallil made his first religious profession together with his batch mates on 17th May 1968. For the next five years he rendered his service at the Mother House, overseeing the agricultural farm and providing provisions that were necessary for the kitchen. His task was not that easy since the minor seminary of the congregation has been functioning at the Mother House then. He also made use of an opportunity for taking a training in chicken farming. He made his final profession on 17th May 1973. Later he was transferred to MCBS Study House, Karukunnu, where he had the responsibility to oversee the farming works in the paddy field and cultivation on the land which he did in all earnestness. But he happened to meet with a very serious accident which left him with lifelong injuries and handicaps. Yet he carried on his service as best he could. In 1979 he was transferred to the Novitiate House at Podimattam, Kanjirapally, where he had to take care of the rubber plantation. After three years he was transferred to SanJoe Bhavan, Nanjangud, where he was to oversee the farming. While serving there he made an attempt at studying for B. A. degree of the Mysore University. In 1989 he was transferred to Emmaus House, Trivandrum. After one year he was asked to render his service at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. Later he was transferred to MCBS House at Bharatha. He has also served at Pious Mount Ashram, St. Thomas Villa, Varadana Bangalore, and the mission stations at Iduvally and Masthikatte.

After long years of service at various institutions, Bro. Thomas was assigned to MCBS Study House, Karukunnu, in 2011, for rest and medical treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital, Pazhanganad. He has been suffering from Asthma and his health was deteriorating. He has been hospitalized, and on 12th December 2011 he was administered the sacrament of anointing. On 14th December 2011 his condition became very critical, and by 6:15p.m. Bro Thomas Chittinappallil breathed his last in the Lord. On the following morning there has been a concelebrated Holy Mass for Bro. Thomas at the Study House.

The funeral service for Bro Thomas Chittinappallil was on 16th December 2011, at the Minor Seminary, Pariyaram. On the way there has been a stopover at his home parish at Paduvapram so that his relatives could pay homage and pray. There has been a stopover and prayer service also at MCBS Zion Provincial House. The funeral service commenced with concelebrated Holy Mass at 10 am in the seminary chapel. The Mass was presided over by the provincial superior, participated by many members of the congregation and attended by a number of religious sisters, friends and relatives of Bro Thomas. Fr. Thomas Edayal preached the homily highlighting the service of Bro Thomas. The concluding part of the service was officiated by the Superior General of the MCBS.

Zealous devotion to the Holy Eucharist, service mindedness, missionary zeal, availability, concern for the poor, patience and resilience in the midst of pain and sufferings etc. are few of Bro Thomas Chittinappallil’s virtues that are to be appreciated and emulated.
