George Kuttiyany was born on 9th April 1928 at Kunnonni in the Diocese of Pala. His parents were Devasia and Anna Kuttiyany and he was seventh of the eight siblings. He was baptised on 16th April 1928. He had his early education under a village teacher. Later he had his primary education at the school managed by CMI Fathers in Poonjar. But he had to discontinue his studies in the 5th standard due to wartime stringency. Early on he had the desire to become a missionary; but it was almost impossible because he did not have the required education. He has been very active in the parish, actively participating in the activities of the Mission League etc.

In March 1960, George happened to meet Fr. Mathew Kanippillil MCBS, who has been visiting the parish as the superior of the Franciscan Third Order. He shared to Fr. Kanippillil his long cherished desire to be a religious. Accordingly he joined the MCBS as a Brother Co-operator on 17th September 1960. He had his initial formation at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. Later he was granted permission to join the 10th batch of MCBS Novices and do the novitiate from 16th May 1961. Fr. George Kanat has been the Novice Master. On successful completion of the novitiate, Bro. George Kuttiyany, along with his batch mates, made the First religious Profession on 17th May 1962. His first assignment was to assist the community at the Mother House. In May 1964 he was transferred to Karimpany Ashram as procurator. But before long his place of service was changed to Lisieux Ashram where his service was more in need as the Minor Seminary has been functioning there. He made his Final Profession on 17th May 1965. He was appointed at the Mother House and was asked to take care of the Rubber plantation. Later he was appointed as the procurator of Karimpany Ashram. In 1969 he was transferred to MCBS Study House, Karukunnu, where he took good care of the paddy cultivation and the coconut trees, which turned out to be a source of income. In 1972 he was transferred to Karimpany Ashram as procurator. He took good care of the house and the agricultural works. Later he was transferred to the Novitiate House, Podimattam, where he had to oversee the works in the Rubber Plantation. In 1979 he was appointed, for a second time, to the MCBS Study House. As usual he carried out his tasks comfortably well for about eight years. He had some health issues and underwent a surgery. His next transfer was to the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. He has been very helpful to the procurator. In May 1990 he was transferred to MCBS Generalate, Chunangamvely, where his task was to oversee the works in the Rubber Plantation, which he did wonderfully well. After four years he was transferred to MCBS House, Anappra. While serving there he has had some health problems. In 1996 he was transferred to the retreat centre at Thannipuzha, where he took care of the arrangements in the chapel and dining hall. In 1999 he was transferred to Lisieux Ashram, Athirampuzha. After one year he was transferred to the Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. He has been taking care of the visitors and guests.

He paid attention to the arrangements in the chapel and keeping it neat and clean. Bro. George Kuttiyany always tried to fulfil the tasks entrusted by the superiors as best as he could. Keeping of accounts has been accurate. He has had a special knack to manage the workers. He took special care to keep the house, especially the chapel, neat and clean. He has been very hospitable to the guests, and very kind to the poor. He has been very punctual for the spiritual exercises of the community.

Bro. Kuttiyany has been advancing in age and his health has been deteriorating. On 15th March 2014, by noon, he started to feel weary and week. In the evening he happened to fall in the room. He was taken to S. H. Medical Centre, Kottayam. Doctors diagnosed him of a stroke, and he was transferred to Caritas Hospital for specialised investigation and treatment. The doctors told that his condition was very critical. He was administered the sacrament of anointing. On 19th March 2014 by 7:10 a.m. Bro. George Kuttiyany breathed his last in the Lord.

The funeral service for Bro George Kuttiyany was on 20th March 2014 at the Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. Following initial prayers the body was carried in procession to L. F. Church. The funeral service commenced with the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by the Superior General and assisted by the provincials and other members of the congregation, and attended by friends and relatives. Fr. George Karintholil preached the homily.

Zealous love for the Eucharistic Jesus, caring love, spirit of prayer, spirit of sacrifice, faithfulness, love for the poor, truthfulness etc. are a few of Bro. Kuttiyany’s virtues that are to be appreciated and emulated.

ഫ്രാൻസിസ്ക്കൻ മൂന്നാം സഭാ സുപ്പീരിയറായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന കണിപ്പിള്ളിൽ മത്തായി അച്ചൻ മുഖേന കുഞ്ഞു വർക്കി ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയുമായി ബന്ധം ആരംഭിച്ചു.

അധികാരികൾ ഭരമേല്പിച്ച എല്ലാക്കാര്യങ്ങളും വിശ്വസ്തതയോടു കൂടി ‘കുഞ്ഞു വർക്കി’ ബ്രദർ നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു. കണക്കിലുള്ള കൃത്യത, സമ്പത്ത് കൈക്കാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നതിലുള്ള വിശ്വസ്തത, സുതാര്യത, കൃഷിയിലുള്ള വൈദഗ്ദ്ധ്യം ഇവയെല്ലാം നിമിത്തം ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമുള്ള ജോലികൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഏല്പിക്കാൻ അധികാരികൾ മടിച്ചില്ല കോട്ടയം എമ്മാവൂസ് പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യൽ ഭവനത്തിൽ വരുകയും പോകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നവരെ കാത്തിരുന്നു ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കാൻ ബ്രദർ ജാഗരൂകനായിരുന്നു. പടിവാതിലലെത്തുന്ന പാവപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ അസാമാന്യമായ താല്പര്യം പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ച് അവരെ സഹായിക്കുന്ന കാര്യം ബ്രദർ ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരുന്നു. ഭവനത്തിന്റെ ഒരുമൊട്ടുസൂചി പോലും നഷ്ടമായിപ്പോകാതെ എല്ലാറ്റിലും ബദറിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ ചെന്നിരുന്നു.

ദൈവാലയവും സങ്കീർത്തിയുമൊക്കെ വെടിപ്പായി കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കാൻ ജാഗരൂകനായിരുന്നു. ബാഹ്യപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നു വിമുക്തനായപ്പോൾ ഡയറിയിൽ കുറി ച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. അതിന്റെ ഏകദേശരൂപം ഇപ്രകാരമാ ണ്. സഹോദരങ്ങൾക്കും കൂട്ടുകാർക്കും കിട്ടാത്ത മഹാഭാഗ്യം അയോഗ്യനും പാപിയുമായ എനിക്കു ദൈവം തരാനിടയായതിനെപ്പറ്റിയാണ് എന്റെ ചിന്തയും ധ്യാനവും. ഇനിയും പലതും ഈശോയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടി അവിടുത്തെ അനുഗ്രഹത്താൽ ചെയ്യണമെന്നാണ് എന്റെ ആഗ്രഹവും പ്രാർത്ഥനയും. വന്നുപോയിട്ടുള്ള തെറ്റുകൾക്ക് ശേഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കാലം പ്രാർത്ഥനയും ധ്യാനവും വഴി പരിഹാരം ചെയ്തു ജീവിക്കാമെന്ന് പ്രതിജ്ഞ ചെയ്തു ജീവിക്കുന്നു. പരിശുദ്ധ അമ്മ, വി.യൗസേപ്പ്, കാവൽമാലാഖാ, നാമകാരനായ വി. ഗീവർഗീസ് എന്നിവരുടെ മാദ്ധ്യസ്ഥ്യം യാചിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങളും അവർ വഴി ലഭിക്കുമെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. നല്ലവനായ ഈശോ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കും എന്ന് ഉറപ്പുണ്ട്.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ഈശോയോടുള്ള തീക്ഷ്ണമായ സ്നേഹം, കരുതലുള്ള സ്നേഹം, പ്രാർത്ഥനാ ചൈതന്യം, ത്യാഗമനോഭാവം, നിയമപാലന നിഷ്ഠ, ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങളിൽപോലുമുള്ള വിശ്വസ്തത, പാവങ്ങളോടുള്ള കാരുണ്യം, ലാളിത്യം, തിരുക്കർമ്മാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളിലും ദൈവാലയ ശുശ്രൂഷയിലും സുറിയാനി ഗാനങ്ങളിലുമുള്ള താല്പര്യം എന്നിവ ബഹു കുറ്റിയാനി ബ്രദറിൽ ശോഭിച്ചിരുന്ന നന്മകളാണ്.
