Mathew Varukuzhiyil was born on 18th December 1913 at Vadakara in the diocese of Pala. His parents were Joseph and Thressia Varukuzhiyil. He was their first born child. He had a brother and two sisters. He had his education at the L.P. & U. P. Schools at Vadakara. As he grew up he got involved in the business of collecting and selling Ayurveda medicinal plants. Fr. Joseph Paredom had been their parish priest, and Mathew got acquainted with him and was attracted by his simple lifestyle and powerful homilies. He wished for a life in imitation of Jesus at Nazareth, where “the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God …” (Lk 2:40). As the eldest son, Mathew took upon himself the responsibility of taking care of his aging parents. Soon after their demise Mathew decided to visit Fr. Joseph Paredom and share with him his own long cherished desire and seek his advice. Fr. Paredom, who has been the Superior General of the MCBS by then, instructed him that he could join the MCBS as a Brother Co-operator. Accordingly Mathew Varukuzhiyil, at age of 42, joined the MCBS as an aspirant on 31st October 1955. His initial formation has been under Fr. Mathew Alakalam at Karimpany Ashram.

On 22nd May 1956, Mathew joined the sixth batch of MCBS Novices. His batch mates were all clerical candidates in various stages of their studies. Fr. Casinos CMI has been assigned as their Novice Master. As he has had some health issues Fr. George Kanatt was appointed to assist him. Sincere and earnest participation in the program of the novitiate enabled Mathew to lay a strong foundation for his religious life. Along with his batch mates he made his first religious Profession on 23rd May 1957.

Bro. Mathew’s first appointment was at Lisieux Ashram, Athirampuzha. He would be the first to arrive in the chapel, and after preparing the Altar for Holy Mass, he would have his meditation and personal prayer. This has been his practice in every community he has served. He would take care of the landed property and the cultivation in the paddy fields, planting of food crops like tapioca and banana plants and taking care of cash crops like coconut trees. He did similar service at Karimpany Ashram also. Then he was transferred to MCBS Study House, Karukunnu, where he invested his expertise and energy and converted the land and paddy fields very productive and sustainable. The land at Podimattam, Kanjirapally, has been surrounded by rivulets on three sides and needed strong retaining walls for the protection of land from floods. It was Bro. Mathew who took up the work of overseeing the construction of the retaining walls and the planting of the rubber trees on the land. When the land at Chunangamvely was purchased for the MCBS Generalate in 1976, he was appointed to oversee both the slaughter tapping of the rubber plantation and the replanting of the rubber trees. Later he has been entrusted with the task of taking care of the farm at Nanjangud, Mysore. Despite the facts that the farm was in an isolated location, the neighbourhood not very friendly and the soil not very fertile he worked very hard for the upkeep of the farm. His next place of service was Sannidhana Ashram, Illithode. He has been very happy to adjust himself to the spiritual set up of the Ashram, and take good care of the coconut trees, Nutmeg trees and Rubber plantation. Later, in 2001, he was transferred to Emmaus Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. His advanced age or the few health issues did not hinder him from doing whatever was possible for the up-keep of the house and its property. He has been very punctual for the community activities. His constant prayer must have been, ‘Lord, do not cast me aside in my old age, as my strength fails, do not forsake me.'(Ps 71: 9)

Bro. Mathew has been having regular medical check-up either at S. H. Medical Centre or St. Thomas Hospital Chethipuzha. During times of illness he has been very particular not to be a burden to anyone and avoid complaining about any inconvenience. On 1st January 2008 he was admitted at St. Thomas Hospital Chethipuzha for care and treatment. By 16th January his condition became worse, and Fr. Provincial administered the Sacrament of Anointing. On 19th March 2008, the Feast of St. Joseph, at 4:30 in the morning, Bro. Mathew Varukuzhiyil breathed his last in the Lord.

Funeral service for Bro. Mathew Varukuzhiyil was on 24th March 2008 at MCBS Emmaus Provincial House, Kaduvakulam. The service commenced with the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by Bishop Joseph Arumachadeth of Bhadravathi, participated by many members of the MCBS, religious sisters and relatives of Bro. Mathew. Fr. Jose Peedikaparmpil gave a very touching homily. Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam of Changanassery officiated the concluding part of the service.

Faithfulness in prayer life, love for the congregation, sense of belongingness, humility, service mindedness, simple life style etc. are a few of Bro. Mathew’s virtues that are to be appreciated and emulated.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയിലെ വലിയ ബ്രദറിൻ്റെ മാതൃ ഇടവക

പാലാ രൂപതയിലെ വടകരയാണ്.

വടകരപ്പള്ളിയിൽ വികാരിയായിരുന്ന ബഹു പറേടത്തിൽ ജോസഫച്ചനുമായുള്ള ബന്ധം ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ഈശോയെ കൂടുതൽ സ്നേഹക്കാൻ വലിയ ബ്രദറിനു പ്രചോദനമായി.

മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ വിസമ്മതം നിമിത്തം സമർപ്പിത ജീവിതത്തിലേയ്ക്കു കടക്കാൻ മാത്യുവിന് നീണ്ട വർഷങ്ങൾ കാത്തിരിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു.

42-ാമത്തെ വയസ്സിലാണ് വാരികുഴി ബ്രദർ ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയിൽ ചേർന്നത്.

1956 മെയ് മാസത്തിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച ആറാമത്തെ ബാച്ച് നൊവിഷ്യറ്റിൽ അംഗമായിരുന്നു മാത്യു ബ്രദർ.

സമർപ്പിതജീവിതത്തിന് അതിന്റേതായ ഭാരവും സന്തോഷം സന്താപവുമെല്ലാമുണ്ടന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ ബ്രദർഎല്ലാം സമചിത്തതയോടെ സ്വീകരിച്ച് യോഗ്യതയാക്കി മാറ്റി.

വ്രതാർപ്പണശേഷം അതിരമ്പുഴ, കരിമ്പാനി, കാരുകുന്ന്, കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളി, ചുണങ്ങംവേലി മൈസൂർ, ഇല്ലിത്തോട്, കൊല്ലാട് എന്നീ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ താമസിച്ച് സ്തുത്യർഹമായ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു.

സഭാസ്ഥാപകപിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ ചൈതന്യം കുറയാതെ സ്വാംശീകരിച്ച വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു വാരികുഴി ബ്രദർ. പ്രാർത്ഥനയും പ്രവർത്തനവും സംയോജിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ അദ്ദേഹം എന്നും ശ്രദ്ധാലുവായിരുന്നു.

ദിവസവും വളരെ നേരം ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ സന്നിധിയിൽ ധ്യാനനിർല്ലീനനാകുമായിരുന്ന വലിയ ബ്രദർ ഈശോ എന്തിനു വിശുദ്ധ കുർബാന സ്ഥാപിച്ചു എന്നതിനു 7 കാരണങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞു തരുന്നു.

1. ഈശോ മരിച്ച് ഉയിർത്ത് പിതാവിന്റെ വലതുവശത്ത് ഇരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ഇരുത്താൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

2. പിതാവേ നമ്മൾ ഒന്നായിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ഇവരും നമ്മിൽ ഒന്നാകാൻ വേണ്ടി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

3. മഹത്വത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുന്ന ആത്മാവ് ത്രിത്വത്തെ മുഖാമുഖമായിക്കണ്ട് ആനന്ദം അനുഭവിപ്പിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

4. ദൈവത്തെ അടുത്ത് അറിയുന്നതിനും പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങളും ദാനങ്ങളും ധാരാളമായി ലഭിക്കുന്നതിനും സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

5. തന്റെ മക്കൾ പിതാവിന്റെ മഹത്വത്തിലും സന്തോഷത്തിലും ആനന്ദത്തിലും ഒരുപോലെ അനുഭവിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

6. പിതാവിന്റെ സ്നേഹത്തിലേക്കു നമ്മെ വിളിക്കുന്നതിനും ദൈവ ഐക്യത്തിൽ നാം ഒന്നായിതീരുന്നതിനും വേണ്ടി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

7. നമ്മുടെ നിത്യരക്ഷയുടെ അച്ചാരമായി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.

ശിഷ്യത്വത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മറ്റൊരു കുറിപ്പിൽ ശിഷ്യനാകാൻ ആർക്കു കഴിയും എന്നതിനു ബ്രദർ നൽകുന്ന ഉത്തരങ്ങൾ താഴെപ്പറയുന്നവയാണ്
