October: Month of the Holy Rosary

October is traditionally associated with the Holy Rosary, with the liturgical celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7. It is also a month rich in celebrations of missionaries, martyrs, religious founders, doctors of the Church and great witnesses of Christian holiness.

Especially important October celebrations

October 1 — St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Virgin and Doctor of the Church, known for her “Little Way” of spiritual childhood, confidence and love.

October 2 — Holy Guardian Angels
A beautiful day to remember the Church’s teaching concerning God’s loving providence and the ministry of the guardian angels. The celebration is a Memorial in the Roman calendar.

October 4 — St. Francis of Assisi
One of the most beloved saints in the Catholic tradition, remembered for his radical poverty, love of Christ, care for creation and peace.

October 5 — St. Faustina Kowalska
A major devotional day connected with Divine Mercy. The US calendar also includes the Optional Memorial of St. Faustina.

October 7 — Our Lady of the Rosary
The principal Marian celebration of the month and an excellent occasion for parish Rosary devotion.

October 9 — St. John Henry Newman
Cardinal, theologian and convert, whose liturgical commemoration has been added to the calendars of some places, including the United States.

October 15 — St. Teresa of Ávila
Virgin, Carmelite reformer, mystic and Doctor of the Church. Her writings include The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection.

October 17 — St. Ignatius of Antioch
Early Christian bishop and martyr whose letters provide important testimony about the early Church, the Eucharist and episcopal ministry.

October 18 — St. Luke the Evangelist
Evangelist and traditionally regarded as the author of the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

October 22 — St. John Paul II
Pope and major figure of the modern Catholic Church. His liturgical memorial is observed on October 22.

October 28 — Saints Simon and Jude
The Feast of St. Simon the Apostle and St. Jude the Apostle. The Roman calendar celebrates both Apostles together.
