The Mother Who Never Ceases to Help

Feast Day: June 27

Among the many titles by which Catholics lovingly honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help holds a special place in the hearts of millions around the world. This beloved devotion reminds us that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, continually intercedes for her children, leading them with unwavering love and compassion to her Son. The Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, celebrated on June 27, is an invitation to renew our trust in Mary’s maternal care and to seek her powerful intercession in every circumstance of life.

The Origin of the Devotion

The devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help centers on a beautiful Byzantine icon believed to have been painted between the 13th and 15th centuries, most likely on the island of Crete. The icon eventually found its way to Rome, where it became associated with numerous reports of answered prayers and miracles.

The image was originally venerated in the Church of St. Matthew in Rome. After the church was destroyed during the Napoleonic era, the icon was preserved but remained hidden for many years. In 1865, Pope Pius IX entrusted the sacred icon to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) with the famous instruction:

“Make her known throughout the world.”

The following year, the icon was solemnly enshrined in the Church of St. Alphonsus on Via Merulana in Rome, where it continues to be venerated today. Since then, devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has spread across every continent, making her one of the most beloved Marian titles in the Catholic Church.

Understanding the Icon

The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is rich in theological symbolism. Every detail carries profound spiritual meaning.

At the center is the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. Mary gazes directly at the faithful rather than at her Son, inviting everyone to place their trust in Christ through her maternal guidance.

The Child Jesus looks toward the two archangels, Michael and Gabriel, who present the instruments of His future Passion. The sight of the Cross, nails, spear, and sponge causes the Child to seek comfort in His Mother’s embrace.

One of the most touching details is the sandal slipping from Jesus’ foot, symbolizing the fear and urgency with which He runs to His Mother. Mary’s calm and compassionate expression reflects her complete trust in God’s saving plan, even as she foresees the suffering that awaits her Son.

The golden background represents heaven, reminding believers that the mystery of salvation is rooted in God’s eternal glory. The icon is not merely a work of art but a visual proclamation of the Gospel and an invitation to contemplate Christ’s redeeming love.

Why “Perpetual Help”?

The title “Perpetual Help” beautifully expresses the Church’s confidence in Mary’s constant maternal care.

Mary does not replace Christ, nor does she act independently of Him. Rather, as the Mother of the Redeemer, she continually intercedes for all who seek her prayers. Her mission is always to lead people closer to Jesus.

Catholics throughout history have turned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in times of illness, family difficulties, financial hardship, anxiety, war, natural disasters, and spiritual struggles. Countless testimonies speak of peace, strength, healing, and renewed faith received through her intercession.

The Wednesday Novena

The Wednesday Novena has become a powerful source of hope for people seeking God’s guidance, comfort, and mercy.
