𝗜𝗙 𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗚𝗢𝗗, 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥?

This is a very important question in understanding the mystery of the Holy Trinity and the Incarnation.

The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. He is one Divine Person with two natures: divine and human.

Because of this, His prayer to the Father makes perfect sense.

𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗡

As man, Jesus experienced everything that is proper to human nature—except sin.

He: • became hungry

• became tired

• suffered pain

• felt sorrow

• and prayed to God the Father

Prayer is an essential part of human relationship with God. So in His human nature, Jesus perfectly models how a human being should live in complete dependence on the Father.

𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗗

At the same time, Jesus is the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father in divinity.

So when Jesus prays, it is not because He is less than the Father, but because within the Trinity there is real relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Son is eternally “from” the Father, and in love He returns all things to the Father.

𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬

When Jesus prays, we are seeing something very deep:

• The Father loves the Son

• The Son loves the Father

• The Holy Spirit is the bond of that divine love

So Christ’s prayer reveals not confusion, but communion within God Himself.

𝗝𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗔𝗦 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗟

Jesus also prays to teach us how to pray.

When He says “Our Father,” He is inviting us into His own relationship with God.

He shows us that: • God is Father

• we are His children

• and prayer is real relationship, not empty words

Jesus prays to the Father because:

He is truly man and prays as man

• He is truly Son within the Trinity

• and He reveals how we are meant to relate to God

Far from proving He is not God, His prayer reveals the depth of who He truly is: the eternal Son who became man so that we might be brought into communion with the Father through the Holy Spirit.
