Thomas Thulumbanmakel was born on 28th December 1941 at Moozhoor in the Diocese of Pala. His parents were Joseph and Anna Thulumbanmakel. He was baptized at St. Mary’s Church on 2nd January 1942. He had his early education at St. Antony’s and St. Joseph’s schools at Manjamattam. He did his High School studies at St. Aloysius, Manalinkal. After his successful completion of the SSLC he joined the Minor Seminary, Lisieux Ashram, Athirampuzha, on 10th June 1960. He had his Novitiate from May 1963 to May 1964. Fr. Thomas Thottumkal was the Novice Master. Along with his batch mates he made his first Religious Profession on 17th May 1964.

He had his major seminary formation at MCBS Study House, Kaukunnu. He did his study of philosophy at Carmelgiri Seminary and Theology at Mngalapuzha Seminary. He was ordained as priest on 17th December 1971 by Archbishop Joseph Parekattil of Ernakulam.

Fr. Thomas Thulumbanmakel’s first appointment was to be a missionary in the Northeast Mission of Assam-Meghalaya. He served as assistant parish priest at Christ the King Parish at Sojong in the Archdiocese of Shillong for one year. Then he was transferred to Chokihola Assumption Parish where he ministered for seven years. His ministry has been among the tribal people. He has been quick enough to learn their language and the people loved his service. As the MCBS has been entrusted with a new Mission in Shimoga, Karnataka, and the mcbs missionaries with their experience in the Northeast Mission were asked to extend their service to the new mission, Fr. Thulumbanmakel was asked to render his service as superior of Pious Mount Ashram, Nellikutty. During 1981-87 he did a wonderful job improving the facilities in the Ashram and extending the coconut and rubber plantations, and also helping out in the nearby parishes with pastoral ministry. Then he was appointed as the director of the mission station at Masthikatte in Karnataka.

In 1989, when the MCBS was entrusted with a new Mission in the Ajmer-Jaipur Diocese in Rajasthan, Fr. Thulumbanmakel has been among the pioneer missionaries who started their ministry there. He has been instrumental for starting a new mission station at Sirohi. The congregation managed to purchase some land there and start with a school and a chapel with regular Mass. He has been able to help a good many number of villagers and religious communities, even in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, through his water divining skill.

Later Fr. Thomas was transferred to Masthikatte, in the Shimoga Mission. While he has been engaged in improving the facilities at the mission station and helping the people improve their living conditions, he had to handle his own health issues. He has been a diabetes patient, and the condition became worse and ended up in the amputation of the right leg, below the knee. Yet he tried to carry on the ministry using an artificial limb, keeping very close to his heart the image of Jesus who journeyed to Mount Calvary, carrying the cross.

He was given a transfer to Karunnya Nivas at Thonichal in Mananthavady for medical treatment and rest. He had regular check-up either at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mananthavady or at Nirmala Hospital, Kozhikode. On 16th May 2009, late in the evening he felt very uneasy, and was immediately taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital. He had a cardiac arrest and breathed his last in the Lord. On 17th morning there was a concelebrated Holy Mass at Karunnya Nivas. Priests, religious and laity from the nearby areas visited, paid homage to and prayed for Fr. Thomas Thulumbanmakel.

The funeral service for Fr. Thomas Thulumbanmakel was on 18th May 2009 at the Minor Seminary, Pariaram. In the morning Archbishop George Valiamattam of Thalasseri visited and prayed for Fr. Thomas. The funeral service commenced with the concelebrated Holy Mass, presided over by Bishop Joseph Arumachadeth MCBS, participated by the superior general, provincial superiors and many members of the congregation, and attended by many religious sisters, laity, friends and relatives. Fr. Thomas Edayal preached a very touching homily. The service ended with the burial in the cemetery in the compound.

Devotion to the Eucharistic Jesus, missionary zeal, hard work, selfless service, spirit of prayer, strong faith in divine providence etc. are few of his virtues that are to be appreciated and emulated.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയുടെ മിഷൻ മുന്നേറ്റത്തിൻ്റെ നാളുകളിൽ പൗരോഹിത്യം സ്വീകരിച്ച തോമസച്ചൻ്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രേഷിത ഭൂമി ഷില്ലോംഗ്‌ അതിരൂപതയിലെ സോജോങ്ങിലുള്ള ക്രിസ്തുരാജാ പള്ളിയിലായിരുന്നു. ഒരു വർഷം കഴിഞ്ഞ് അസ്സാമിലെ ചോക്കിഹോളായിലെ ” സ്വർഗ്ഗാരോപിത ദൈവാലയത്തിലേക്കു സ്ഥലം മാറ്റം അവിടെ 8 വർഷം ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു.

1981 മുതൽ 1987 വരെ മലബാറിലെ നെല്ലിക്കുറ്റി പയസ് മൗണ്ട് ആശ്രമമായിരുന്നു പ്രവർത്തന മേഖല

1987 മുതൽ രണ്ടു വർഷത്തോളം ഷിമോഗയിലെ മസ്തിക്കട്ടയായിരുന്നു പ്രേഷിത വയൽ.

1989 ൽ സഭയുടെ പ്രവർത്തനം രാജസ്ഥാനിലേക്കു വ്യാപിച്ചപ്പോൾ തോമസച്ചൻ അവിടേക്കും പ്രവർത്തന മണ്ഡലം മാറ്റി.

1991 മുതൽ സിറോഹിയിൽ താമസിച്ചു മിഷൻ പ്രവർ‌ത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചു.

ജലസ്രോതസ്സുകൾ കണ്ടെത്തുവാൻ തോമസച്ചനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന സിദ്ധി അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ” പാനി മഹാരാജ്” എന്ന പേരു ലഭിക്കാൻ കാരണമാക്കി.

മാനുഷികതയുടെ നിറകുടമായിരുന്നു തോമസച്ചൻ, എവിടെയും നല്ല ബന്ധങ്ങൾ പുലർത്തി ആവശ്യത്തിലായിരിക്കുന്നവരെ വിവേചനം കൂടാതെ പരിഗണിക്കുകയും വാത്സല്യപൂർവ്വം സഹായിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക അച്ചൻ്റെ സ്വഭാവമായിന്നു.

രാജസ്ഥാനിൽ നിന്നു തിരികെ എത്തിയ തോമസച്ചൻ ഷിമോഗായിലെ മസ്തിക്കട്ടയിൽ ശുശ്രൂഷ തുടർന്നു.

ഈക്കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ രോഗം നിമിത്തം വലതുകാൽ മുറിച്ചുകളയേണ്ടിവന്നു.

2004 മുതൽ മാനന്തവാടി തോണിച്ചാലിലേ കാരുണ്യ നിവാസിലായിരുന്നു താമാസം.

അംഗവൈകല്യമുണ്ടായപ്പോഴും ദൈവജനത്തിന് ഒരു ബലി നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതിരിക്കാൻ അച്ചൻ പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ച അജപാലന താൽപര്യം അവസ്മരണീയമാണ്.

പൗരോഹിത്യ ജീവിതം ഒരു കാൽവരികയറ്റമാണെന്ന് അറിയാമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് വേദനകൾക്കിടയിലും പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചിരുന്ന തോമസച്ചൻ ഏവരെയും അതിശയിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. കാരുണ്യ നിവാസിലെ 5 വർഷത്തെ വിശ്രമ ജീവിതത്തിനിടയിലും ഒരു വലിയ മിഷനറിയുടെ ജോലി ശാന്തമായി നിർവ്വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന തോമാച്ചൻ 2009 മെയ് മാസം പതിനാറാം തീയതി സ്വർഗ്ഗ പിതാവിൻ്റെ ഭവനത്തിലേക്കു യാത്രയായി.

മെയ് മാസം പതിനെട്ടാം തീയതി പരിയാരത്തു നടന്ന മൃതസംസ്കാര ശുശ്രൂഷകൾക്ക് ഭദ്രാവതി രൂപതാദ്ധ്യക്ഷൻ മാർ ജോസഫ് അരുമ ച്ചാടത്ത് മുഖ്യകാർമ്മികത്വം വഹിച്ചു.
