Life History of Fr. Mathew Arackal MCBS

Fr. Mathew Arackall lived a rich and blessed life dedicated to spreading the light of knowledge and standing firmly for the truth. He was called to eternal rest by our Heavenly Father on July 25, 2026, just one day before his 70th birthday.

Early Life and Divine Call

Fr. Mathew was known at home as Mathew Joseph. He was born on July 26, 1956, into the Arackal family of the Kalvari Giri parish in Kulappuram, in the Eparchy of Kothamangalam. His parents, Joseph and Martha, rooted him in deep spiritual values that built a strong foundation for his religious and priestly life. His elder siblings, George Joseph and Sr. Rosily of the St. Anne’s Congregation, were his constant strength and support. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, he reflected nobility and grace throughout his life.

On July 8, 1971, Mathew Joseph entered the Holy Spirit Minor Seminary of the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) in Kaduvakulam. He completed his novitiate formation under Fr. Mathew Kanippally and made his first religious profession on May 17, 1973. Following this, he completed his philosophy and theology studies at the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. On December 19, 1981, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Mar Antony Padiyara.

Areas of Ministry and Service

Following his ordination, Fr. Mathew began his service as a teacher at the Holy Spirit Minor Seminary in Kaduvakulam. To further strengthen his academic gifts, he earned a B.A. in English from Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvananthapuram and an M.A. in English from St. Berchmans College in Changanacherry.

From 1988 to 1993, he served as the Vice-Rector of the Lisieux Seminary in Athirampuzha. His deep knowledge of English language and literature was a great blessing to the students. He played an important role in shaping holy, wise, and thoughtful priests, always encouraging his students to work hard and give their best.

For a combined 15 years (1994–2007 and 2016–2018), Fr. Mathew served in parish ministry in the United States. He carried out his duties with great sincerity and care, becoming a true spiritual guide to the local people, who greatly admired his wonderful command of English.

He also served as the superior of the Anappara MCBS House from 2007 to 2008 and taught English at St. Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary in Thiruvananthapuram from 2008 to 2010, where students remembered him as one of their finest teachers. Later, he served as the superior of the Thiruvananthapuram Emmaus House and vicar of Emmaus parish from 2010 to 2013, followed by his service as superior of the Sengottai Mission in Tamil Nadu. In 2016, he also spent a brief period helping at the parish in Kappad, Kanjirappally.

From 2018 onward, he was based at the Kaduvakulam Emmaus Provincial House. During these years, he gladly taught English at St. Stanislaus Minor Seminary in the Archdiocese of Kottayam and at the OSH Minor Seminary, Kottayam. Even though he taught with strict discipline, he showed great love for his students and celebrated their success with genuine joy.

Illness and Final Days

On January 27, 2025, Fr. Mathew was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He bravely faced the illness and treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, without fear or complaint, maintaining hope in his eyes until the very end.

As his condition progressed, he received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on May 28 from Provincial Superior Fr. Abraham Kochupurayil. He spent his final 27 days at the SH Medical Centre in Kottayam. Despite experiencing severe weakness, insomnia, and physical discomfort, he remained thoughtful and considerate of everyone who cared for him.

With deep peace and his soul ready to meet God, Fr. Mathew passed away in the early hours of July 25, 2026, around 3:30 AM, just one day before turning 70.

Funeral Services

On Sunday, July 26, his mortal remains were brought to the MCBS Emmaus Provincial House in Kaduvakulam. Family members, friends, students, and community members gathered to pay their final respects, while Mar Mathew Moolakkattu, the Archbishop of the Archeparchy of Kottayam, His Auxiliary Bishop Geevarghese Mar Aprem and Bishop Mar George Madathikandathil of the Eparchy of Kothamangalam visited to offer their prayers. The following morning, on July 27, Mar Thomas Tharayil, the Archbishop of Archeparchy of Changanacherry arrived to pray for him before the funeral services began.

The solemn funeral rites commenced at 9:00 a.m. at the Emmaus Provincial House in Kaduvakulam, led by Provincial Superior Rev. Fr. Abraham Kochupurayil, with assistance from Rev. Fr. George Mundunadackal, Rev. Fr. George Kattoor, and Rev. Fr. Abraham Vettiyolil.

At 9:45 a.m., the second part of the service took place at the Little Flower Church in Kaduvakulam. This prayer service was led by Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Paikkattu, assisted by Rev. Fr. Jose Karathuruth, Rev. Fr. George Vadakkeparambil, Rev. Fr. Johny Karieth, and Rev. Fr. Dominic Mundatt. Following these prayers, Rev. Fr. George Kadoopparayil read the life history.

The Holy Mass was then celebrated, with Mar Thomas Elavanal serving as the principal celebrant. Concelebrating alongside him were Superior General Rev. Fr. Augustine Paikkattu, Emmaus Provincial Superior Rev. Fr. Abraham Kochupurayil, Zion Provincial Superior Rev. Fr. Mathew Thekkemuriyil, Param Prasad Provincial Superior Rev. Fr. Simon Chiramel, and batchmates Rev. Fr. Eppachen Kizhakkethalackal and Rev. Fr. George Ambazhathumkal. During the service, Rev. Fr. George Vazhappallil delivered a touching remembrance speech.

The final part of the funeral service was led by Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, the Bishop of the Eparchy of Pala, accompanied by Mar Thomas Elavanal, Rev. Fr. Augustine Paikkattu, and Rev. Fr. Abraham Kochupurayil.

Following the sacred services, Fr. Mathew’s mortal body was laid to rest in the MCBS Cemetery at Kaduvakulam around 12:30 PM.

Personality and Virtues

Affectionately known as ‘Mathechan’ by his batchmates and friends, he was widely remembered for his honesty, transparency, and simplicity. He never sought human approval and always spoke the plain truth. He lived a simple life free of luxury or unnecessary expenses. He deeply loved nature, planting trees and encouraging others to do the same. Above all, he cherished his religious congregation (MCBS), constantly working for its spiritual growth and unity. He was a priest of simple, unpretentious spirituality who was always ready to hear confessions anywhere, at any time.

The lessons of goodness, zeal, love, knowledge, and integrity taught by Fr. Mathew will forever remain in the hearts of his family, community members, friends, and countless students. During his time teaching in the minor seminary, he often advised his students:

“Whenever you receive Holy Communion, pray like this: ‘Jesus, make me a priest of holiness, knowledge, and prudence.’”

He did not merely give this advice in words; he practiced it throughout his entire life. As we remember him – a dedicated seminary professor, vice-rector, superior, missionary, and pastor who walked the path of righteousness – we mourn the loss of a guiding light. Yet, the profound impact of his noble life will continue to burn brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.

ഫാ. മാത്യു അറയ്ക്കൽ എംസിബിഎസ്: ജീവിതരേഖ

“ഞാൻ നന്നായി പൊരുതി; എൻ്റെ ഓട്ടം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി; വിശ്വാസം കാത്തു” (2 തിമോത്തി 4:7).

വിജ്ഞാനത്തിൻ്റെ വെളിച്ചം തെളിയിച്ചും സത്യത്തിൻ്റെ പക്ഷത്ത് ഉറച്ചുനിന്നും ജീവിച്ച ഒരു ധന്യപു രോഹിതനായിരുന്നു ഫാ. മാത്യു അറയ്ക്കൽ. തൻ്റെ എഴുപതാം ജന്മദിനത്തിൻ്റെ തലേന്നായിരുന്നു, (2026 ജൂലൈ 25 ന്) അദ്ദേഹം നിത്യസമ്മാനത്തിനായി സ്വർഗസ്ഥനായ പിതാവിൻ്റെ സന്നിധിയിലേക്ക് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. മനോഹരവും ധന്യവുമായിരുന്നു ആ ജീവിതം.

ബാല്യം, ദൈവവിളി

കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയിലെ കുളപ്പുറം കാൽവരി ഗിരി ഇടവകയിലെ അറയ്ക്കൽ കുടുംബത്തിൽ 1956 ജൂലൈ 26 നാണ് മാത്യു ജോസഫ് എന്ന ഫാ. മാത്യു അറയ്ക്കൽ ജനിച്ചത്. പിതാവ് ജോസഫും മാതാവ് മർത്തയും പകർന്നുനൽകിയ ആത്മീയചൈതന്യം അച്ചൻ്റെ സന്ന്യാസ വൈദികജീവിതത്തിന് അടിത്തറ പാകി. മൂത്ത സഹോദരങ്ങളായ ജോർജ് ജോസഫും, സെൻ്റ് ആൻസ് സന്ന്യാസിനീ സമൂഹ ത്തിലെ അംഗമായ സി. റോസിലിയും അച്ചൻ്റെ ജീവിതയാത്രയിലെ കരുത്തും പിന്തുണയുമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു കത്തോലിക്കാ കുടുംബത്തിൻ്റെ എല്ലാ നന്മകളും ഉൾക്കൊണ്ട് വളർന്ന അച്ചൻ, ജീവിതത്തിലെന്നും ആ കുലീനത്വം പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.

1971 ജൂലൈ എട്ടിന് ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സമൂഹത്തിൻ്റെ കടുവാക്കുളം ഹോളി സ്‌പിരിറ്റ് മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിൽ മാത്യു ജോസഫ് പ്രവേശിച്ചു. കടുവാക്കുളത്ത് തന്നെയായിരുന്നു നോവിഷ്യേറ്റ് പരി ശീലനവും. ഫാ. മാത്യു കണിപ്പള്ളിയുടെ കീഴിൽ നവസന്ന്യാസകാലം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി 1973 മെയ് 17 ന് ആദ്യവ്രതവാഗ്ദാനം നടത്തി. തുടർന്ന് വടവാതൂർ സെൻ്റ് തോമസ് അപ്പസ്തോലിക് സെമിനാരിയിൽ ഫിലോസഫി – തിയോളജി പഠനങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. 1981 ഡിസംബർ 19 ന് മാർ ആന്റണി പടിയറ പിതാവിൽ നിന്നും തിരുപ്പട്ടം സ്വീകരിച്ചു.

പ്രവർത്തന മേഖലകൾ

വൈദികനായ ശേഷം അച്ചൻ്റെ ആദ്യ നിയമനം കടുവാക്കുളം ഹോളി സ്‌പിരിറ്റ് മൈനർ സെമിനാരി യിൽ അധ്യാപകനായിട്ടായിരുന്നു. പഠനരംഗത്ത് മികവ് പുലർത്തിയ അച്ചൻ, സെമിനാരിയിലെ ഒരു വർഷത്തെ ശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കു ശേഷം തിരുവനന്തപുരം മാർ ഇവാനിയോസ് കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ ബി.എയും ചങ്ങനാശേരി എസ്.ബി. കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ എം.എ. ബിരുദവും കരസ്ഥമാക്കി.

അതിനു ശേഷം 1988 മുതൽ 1993 വരെ അച്ചൻ അതിരമ്പുഴ ലിസ്യൂ സെമിനാരിയിൽ വൈസ് റെക്ട റായി നിയമിതനായി. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷയിലും സാഹിത്യത്തിലുമുള്ള അച്ചൻ്റെ പ്രാവീണ്യം സെമിനാരി ക്കാർക്ക് വലിയ അനുഗ്രഹമായിരുന്നു. വിശുദ്ധിയും വിജ്ഞാനവും വിവേകവുമുള്ള നിരവധി വൈദി കരെ വാർത്തെടുക്കുന്നതിൽ അച്ചൻ വഹിച്ച പങ്ക് വളരെ വലുതാണ്. അക്കാദമിക് മേഖലയിൽ കഠി നാധ്വാനം ചെയ്ത അച്ചൻ, അതേ ഗൗരവവും ആത്മാർഥതയും കഠിനാധ്വാനവും തൻ്റെ വിദ്യാർഥികളിൽ നിന്നും എപ്പോഴും പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു. ബൗദ്ധിക കാര്യങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം ആത്മീയചിന്തകളും അച്ചൻ തൻ്റെ ക്ലാസുകളിലൂടെ പങ്കുവച്ചു.

1994 മുതൽ 2007 വരെയും പിന്നീട് 2016 മുതൽ 2018 വരെയുമുള്ള 15 വർഷങ്ങൾ അച്ചൻ അജപാ ലന ശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കായി അമേരിക്കയിലായിരുന്നു. തൻ്റെ കർത്തവ്യങ്ങൾ ആത്മാർഥയോടെയും കൃത്യത യോടും കൂടി നിർവഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവിടത്തെ വിശ്വാസി സമൂഹത്തിനും അച്ചൻ ആത്മീയ വഴികാട്ടി യായി മാറി. അച്ചൻ്റെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വൈഭവത്തെ അമേരിക്കക്കാർ വരെ പ്രശംസിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.

2007-2008 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ അച്ഛൻ ആനപ്പാറ എംസിബിഎസ് ഹൗസിൻ്റെ സുപ്പീരിയറായിരുന്നു. 2008 മുതൽ 2010 വരെ തിരുവനന്തപുരം സെൻ്റ് മേരീസ് മലങ്കര മേജർ സെമിനാരിയിലെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് അധ്യാപകനായി അച്ചൻ നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷയെ സ്നേഹിക്കാനും അതിൽ പ്രവീണ്യം നേടാനും അവിടത്തെ സെമിനാരിക്കാരെ അച്ചൻ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. അച്ചനെപ്പോലെ നന്നായി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠി പ്പിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരാളില്ല എന്നായിരുന്നു അവിടത്തെ വിദ്യാർഥികളുടെ അഭിപ്രായം.

തുടർന്നുള്ള മൂന്ന് വർഷങ്ങൾ (2010-2013) തിരുവനന്തപുരം എമ്മാവൂസ് ഭവനത്തിൻറെ സുപ്പീരി യറായും എമ്മാവൂസ് ഇടവകയുടെ വികാരിയായും അച്ചൻ ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്‌തു. അതിനുശേഷം തമി ഴ്നാട്-ചെങ്കോട്ട മിഷൻ സുപ്പീരിയർ ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു അച്ചൻ്റെ നിയമനം. ചെങ്കോട്ട മിഷന്റെ വളർ ച്ചയിൽ അച്ചന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യവും ഇടപെടലുകളും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായിരുന്നു. 2016 ൽ കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളി രൂപത യിലെ കപ്പാട് ഇടവകയിൽ കുറേ മാസങ്ങൾ സഹായിച്ചിരുന്നു.

2018 മുതൽ കടുവാക്കുളം എമ്മാവൂസ് പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യൽ ഹൗസ് കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചായിരുന്നു അച്ചന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ. ഈ കാലയളവിൽ അച്ചൻ കോട്ടയം അതിരൂപതയുടെ സെൻന്റ് സ്റ്റാനിസ്ലാവൂസ് മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തി. ഒപ്പം ഒ.എസ്‌.എച്ച്. മൈനർ സെമിനാരിയിലും അദ്ദേഹം പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. “അച്ചൻ പഠിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ കുട്ടികൾ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ പഠി ക്കുന്നു” എന്നായിരുന്നു സഹപ്രവർത്തകരായ വൈദികർ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത്. കർശനമായ രീതിയിൽ ക്ലാസുകൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുമ്പോഴും കുട്ടികളോട് അളവറ്റ സ്നേഹമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരു ന്നത്. ഈ സമീപനത്തിലൂടെ വൈദികാർഥികളെ വളരെയധികം പ്രചോദിപ്പിക്കാൻ അച്ചനു സാധിച്ചി രുന്നു. പരീക്ഷകളിൽ കുട്ടികൾ ഉന്നതവിജയം നേടുമ്പോൾ അവരേക്കാളും സന്തോഷവും ആഹ്ളാ ദവും പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത് അച്ചനായിരുന്നു എന്നതിന് എല്ലാവരും സാക്ഷികളാണ്.

ചില വൈദികരുടെയും സിസ്റ്റേഴ്‌സിൻ്റെയും പിഎച്ച്.ഡി തീസിസുകൾ സൂക്ഷ്‌മമായി തിരുത്തി നൽകാനും അച്ചൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു.

മാത്യു അറയ്ക്കൽ അച്ചൻ്റെ ബാച്ചുകാരും സ്നേഹിതരും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത് മത്തച്ചൻ എന്നായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ വാക്കുകൾ ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്: “ജീവിതത്തിലുടനീളം തികഞ്ഞ സത്യസന്ധ തയും കൃത്യതയും പുലർത്തിയ വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു മത്തച്ചൻ. വാക്കിലും പ്രവൃത്തിയിലും ഒരുപോലെ ആ സത്യസന്ധത ദൃശ്യമായിരുന്നു. മനുഷ്യപ്രീതിക്കു വേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം ഒന്നും ചെയ്‌തിട്ടില്ല. ഉള്ള കാര്യം അതേപോലെ തുറന്നുപറയുന്ന സ്വഭാവം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എപ്പോഴും ഉള്ളിൽ നിറയെ സ്നേഹമുള്ള ആളായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. നിഷ്‌കളങ്കനായ വൈദികൻ. ലളിതജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഉടമ. തുറന്ന പുസ്‌തകം പോലെ ഒരാൾ. അധികം ചിലവുകളോ, ആഡംബരമോ ഒരിക്കലും അദ്ദേഹ ത്തിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.” ഇതാണ് അവരുടെ വാക്കുകൾ.

പ്രകൃതിയോടും ചുറ്റുപാടുകളോടും വലിയ സ്നേഹം പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന ആളായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം. ചെടികളും മരങ്ങളും നട്ടുപിടിപ്പിക്കുകയും നട്ടുപിടിപ്പിക്കാൻ മറ്റുള്ളവരെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. എല്ലാത്തിനുമുപരി, താൻ അംഗമായ ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സന്ന്യാസ സമൂഹത്തെ അച്ചൻ വളരെയേറെ സ്നേഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. സമൂഹം ആത്മീയതയിലും കൂട്ടായ്‌മയിലും വളരണമെന്നും, അതിന്റെ ചൈതന്യം ലോകമെങ്ങും പ്രകാശിക്കണമെന്നും ആത്മാർഥമായി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും അതി നായി പ്രയത്നിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. സമൂഹാംഗങ്ങളുടെ വളർച്ചയിലും ഉയർച്ചയിലും അച്ചൻ സന്തോഷിക്കുകയും അവരെ അഭിനന്ദിക്കാൻ സമയം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്‌തിരുന്നു. തൊങ്ങ ലുകളില്ലാത്ത ആത്മീയതയുടെ ഉടമയായിരുന്ന അച്ചൻ ഏതുസമയത്തും എവിടെയും കുമ്പസാരിപ്പി ക്കാൻ പോകാൻ തയ്യാറായിരുന്നു.

കാൻസർ രോഗം

2025 ജനുവരി 27 നായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ആമാശയ കാൻസർ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചത്. അതിനു മുൻപ് പലപ്പോഴും അച്ചൻ വയറിന് അസുഖമായിട്ട് ചികിത്സ തേടിയിരുന്നു. കോട്ടയം കാരിത്താസ് ആശുപ ത്രിയിലായിരുന്നു കാൻസർ ചികിത്സ. രോഗത്തെയും ചികിത്സയെയും അദ്ദേഹം ധീരതയോടെ നേരിട്ടു. കീമോതെറാപ്പി, റേഡിയേഷൻ എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ഭയമോ, പരാതികളോ ഇല്ലാതെ കടന്നുപോയി. അവ സാനം വരെ പ്രതീക്ഷയായിരുന്നു ആ കണ്ണുകളിൽ. രോഗം വർധിച്ച സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, മെയ് 28 ന് പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യൽ സുപ്പീരിയർ ഫാ. അബ്രഹാം കൊച്ചുപുരയിലിൽ നിന്നും അച്ചൻ രോഗീലേപനം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. ക്രമേണ രോഗം ശരീരത്തെ കീഴടക്കിത്തുടങ്ങി. ക്ഷീണം, ഉറക്കമില്ലായ്‌മ, മറ്റ് ശാരീരിക അസ്വസ്ഥതകൾ എന്നിവ വർധിച്ചതോടെ അച്ചൻ തൻ്റെ ദിനങ്ങൾ ആശുപത്രിയിലും പ്രൊവിൻഷ്യൽ ഹൗസിലുമായി മാറിമാറി ചിലവഴിച്ചു.
