Feast Day: 12 October
Saint Carlo Acutis (1991–2006) was a young Italian Catholic who used his talents, especially his knowledge of computers and the internet, to share the beauty of the Catholic faith. Deeply devoted to the Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the poor, he demonstrated that holiness is possible even in ordinary teenage life. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIV on 7 September 2025.
Carlo is widely known for his Eucharistic devotion and his pioneering work in creating a digital exhibition on Eucharistic miracles. His short life continues to inspire young people to discover Jesus, use technology responsibly, and make holiness the goal of everyday life.
1. Early Life and Family
Carlo Acutis was born on 3 May 1991 in London, England, to Italian parents, Andrea Acutis and Antonia Salzano. His family returned to Milan, Italy, when he was still an infant. He grew up in a loving family environment and attended Catholic schools.
From an early age, Carlo showed a special interest in the Catholic faith. Although his parents were not initially as deeply involved in religious practice as he would later become, Carlo developed a remarkable personal love for Jesus and the Church.
He was cheerful, friendly, intelligent, and approachable. He enjoyed playing football, spending time with friends, learning about computers, and engaging in ordinary activities familiar to young people. His life reminds us that becoming a saint does not mean withdrawing from the world; it means allowing God’s grace to transform the way we live in it.
2. His Love for the Holy Eucharist
The Holy Eucharist was at the centre of Carlo’s spiritual life. He received his First Holy Communion at the age of seven, earlier than was customary, after receiving the necessary permission because of his spiritual preparation.
From then on, he attended Holy Mass daily whenever possible and spent time in Eucharistic adoration. He believed that Jesus in the Eucharist was the greatest source of spiritual strength and the surest guide on the journey toward heaven.
One saying widely associated with him expresses this conviction:
“The Eucharist is my highway to heaven.”
Carlo encouraged others to rediscover the beauty of the Eucharist and the importance of frequent reception of Holy Communion, proper spiritual preparation, and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
He also had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed the Rosary regularly. For Carlo, the Rosary and the Eucharist were not separate practices but complementary ways of growing closer to Jesus through Mary’s maternal guidance.
His example challenges Catholics today to recover a deeper appreciation of the Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration, Confession, and personal prayer.
3. A Mission to Share Eucharistic Miracles
Carlo recognized that modern technology could become a powerful instrument for evangelization. With his computer skills, he designed websites and digital resources to communicate the teachings of the Church.
One of his most important projects was an international exhibition documenting Eucharistic miracles reported throughout the history of the Church. He worked to collect information, organize accounts, and present the material in an accessible format. The exhibition helped people explore the Church’s Eucharistic tradition and encouraged renewed reflection on the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
Carlo’s project demonstrated that computers and the internet need not be used only for entertainment or personal gain. They can also serve education, faith formation, and the proclamation of the Gospel.
For this reason, he is often called the patron of the internet or the saint of the digital age in popular devotion. These are descriptive titles rather than a formal universal patronage designation by the Church.
His example is especially relevant today. Young people can use social media, websites, videos, and other digital tools to share truth, encourage goodness, defend human dignity, and communicate the Gospel with respect and creativity.
4. His Love for the Poor and Needy
Carlo’s holiness was expressed not only in prayer but also in practical charity. He was sensitive to people who were poor, homeless, or experiencing difficulties. He shared what he had with those in need and treated people with dignity and kindness.
He understood that love for Jesus in the Eucharist must lead to love for Jesus in one’s neighbor. His faith was not merely a private devotion; it influenced his relationships, choices, and daily responsibilities.
Carlo also showed kindness to classmates and those who were bullied or excluded. He reminds us that even small acts of generosity—a listening ear, a word of encouragement, a shared meal, or assistance to someone in difficulty—can become expressions of Christian love.
His life teaches that holiness is not measured by popularity, wealth, academic achievement, or extraordinary abilities. It is measured by our response to God’s grace and our willingness to love.
5. His Illness and Holy Death
In October 2006, Carlo was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was admitted to hospital in Monza, Italy.
Facing serious illness at only fifteen years of age, Carlo offered his suffering for the Pope and the Church. He received the Anointing of the Sick and remained rooted in his faith during his final days.
Carlo died on 12 October 2006, at the age of fifteen. His death deeply affected his family and those who knew him, but his witness continued to spread far beyond his immediate community.
His life reminds Christians that holiness does not depend on the length of one’s earthly life. A young person can live with remarkable faith, generosity, and spiritual maturity. Carlo’s example also invites us to accompany the sick with compassion and to unite our sufferings with Christ while continuing to hope in eternal life.
6. Beatification and Canonization
The Church began formally investigating Carlo’s life and reputation for holiness after his death. Pope Francis declared him Venerable in 2018, recognizing his heroic practice of Christian virtues.
He was beatified on 10 October 2020 in Assisi, Italy, following the recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession.
A second miracle was subsequently approved, opening the way for his canonization. On 7 September 2025, Pope Leo XIV canonized Saint Carlo Acutis in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican, together with Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati.
His liturgical memorial is celebrated on 12 October, the anniversary of his death.
Carlo’s canonization was a joyful moment for the universal Church, especially for young Catholics. It affirmed that holiness is possible in the modern world and that ordinary activities can become pathways to sanctity when they are lived in friendship with Christ.
7. Spiritual Lessons from Saint Carlo Acutis
1. Put Jesus at the centre of your life. Carlo’s devotion to the Eucharist shows that a living relationship with Christ is the foundation of Christian holiness.
2. Make holiness your daily goal. We do not need to perform extraordinary deeds to become saints. Faithfulness in study, work, family life, prayer, and service matters deeply.
3. Use technology for good. The internet can spread knowledge, truth, encouragement, and the Gospel when used responsibly.
4. Care for the poor. Genuine love for Christ must be expressed through generosity, respect, and practical assistance to those in need.
5. Persevere through suffering. Carlo’s final illness reminds us that faith can sustain hope even in painful and uncertain circumstances.
6. Remain close to Mary. His devotion to the Rosary encourages us to seek Mary’s intercession and follow her example of faithfulness to Jesus.
7. Do not postpone holiness. Carlo’s short life teaches young and old alike that the time to love God and serve others is today.
