The Catholic Church celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 22, inviting the faithful to honor Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. This beautiful feast, celebrated eight days after the Solemnity of the Assumption, reminds us that the Mother of Jesus, having faithfully shared in the life, suffering, and mission of her Son, now shares in a unique way in His heavenly glory.

The title “Queen” does not place Mary on the same level as God. Mary is a creature, completely dependent upon God’s grace. Her queenship comes entirely from her relationship with Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Mary is Queen because Jesus is King.

Her crown is not a symbol of worldly power. It is a crown of love, humility, service, intercession, and spiritual motherhood.

The Origin of the Feast

Although Christians have honored Mary as Queen from ancient times, the feast in its present form was established by Pope Pius XII.

On October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam—meaning “To the Queen of Heaven.” In this important document, he explained the theological and spiritual foundations of Mary’s queenship.

The Pope initially established the feast for May 31. Following the revision of the General Roman Calendar, the celebration was later placed on August 22, the octave day of the Assumption.

The position of the feast is deeply meaningful. On August 15, the Church celebrates Mary’s glorious Assumption into heaven. One week later, the Church contemplates her heavenly glorification and honors her as Queen.

Thus, the two celebrations are closely connected:

• August 15 – The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
• August 22 – The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary who was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory is honored as the Queen who reigns with her Son.

The Biblical Foundation of Mary’s Queenship

The title Queen of Heaven may immediately bring to mind a crown, a throne, and royal glory. However, the biblical understanding of queenship is important for understanding Mary’s role.

In the Old Testament, the mother of the king often held a special position in the royal court.

In the Davidic kingdom, the queen mother, known as the Gebirah, held a position of dignity and influence.

A beautiful example is found in the First Book of Kings. When Bathsheba, the mother of King Solomon, approached her son, the king honored her by arranging a throne for her at his right hand:

“So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and a seat was brought for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right.”
— 1 Kings 2:19

Jesus Christ is the eternal King, the Son of David. If Jesus is the King of the Kingdom of God, Mary, His Mother, has a unique role analogous to that of the queen mother.

This helps us understand why the Church honors her as Queen.

The Angel Gabriel announced to Mary:

“The Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
— Luke 1:32–33

Mary is the Mother of this eternal King.

Therefore, her queenship is rooted first of all in her divine motherhood.

Mary Is Queen Because She Is the Mother of the King

One of the most important foundations of Mary’s queenship is her role as the Mother of Jesus Christ.

At the Annunciation, Mary freely accepted God’s plan:

“Let it be with me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

Through her faithful “Yes,” the eternal Word took flesh in her womb.

Jesus is:

• King of Kings
• Lord of Lords
• The Son of David
• The eternal ruler whose kingdom will never end

Mary is therefore honored as the Mother of the King.

But her queenship is much deeper than a title based merely on family relationship.

Mary is also Queen because she cooperated, by God’s grace, in the saving mission of her Son.

She remained faithful to Jesus throughout His earthly life.

She was present:

• At His conception and birth.
• During His hidden life.
• At the beginning of His public ministry.
• At the wedding feast at Cana.
• During the journey toward Calvary.
• At the foot of the Cross.
• With the Apostles in prayer as they awaited the Holy Spirit.

Mary’s crown is inseparable from her faithfulness.

Before she was crowned in glory, she walked the difficult path of discipleship.

The Queen Who Stood at the Foot of the Cross

The queenship of Mary cannot be understood apart from the Cross.

In the world, kings and queens are often associated with wealth, luxury, and power.

Mary’s path was entirely different.

Her royal throne was, in a spiritual sense, closely connected with Calvary.

She stood beneath the Cross while her Son suffered and died.

The Gospel tells us:

“Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother…”
— John 19:25

Mary did not abandon Jesus.

She remained faithful in the darkest hour.

At the Cross, Jesus entrusted His Mother to the beloved disciple:

“Woman, here is your son.”

And to the disciple:

“Here is your mother.”
— John 19:26–27

In this moment, the Church sees the spiritual motherhood of Mary extended to the disciples of Christ.

The Queen is also a Mother.

She does not reign by dominating her children.

She reigns through love.

She does not lead people away from Christ.

She always leads them toward Christ.

Her message at Cana expresses the entire purpose of authentic Marian devotion:

“Do whatever he tells you.”
— John 2:5

These words could be considered the heart of Mary’s spiritual mission.

A true devotion to Mary always brings us closer to Jesus.

A Crown of Humility

The greatness of Mary is one of the great paradoxes of Christianity.

She is the Queen of Heaven, yet she called herself:

“the servant of the Lord.”
— Luke 1:38

She is exalted above all creatures, yet she lived in humility.

In the Magnificat, Mary proclaimed:

“He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.”
— Luke 1:52

Mary’s queenship reveals an important truth about the Kingdom of God:

The path to glory is the path of humility.

The one who called herself a servant became the Queen of Heaven.

The one who lived in obscurity became blessed by generations.

The one who stood faithfully at the Cross now shares in the glory of her risen Son.

Her crown is the crown of a humble servant.

Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth

Catholic tradition honors Mary with many royal titles:

• Queen of Heaven
• Queen of Angels
• Queen of Patriarchs
• Queen of Prophets
• Queen of Apostles
• Queen of Martyrs
• Queen of Confessors
• Queen of Virgins
• Queen of All Saints
• Queen Conceived without Original Sin
• Queen Assumed into Heaven
• Queen of the Most Holy Rosary
• Queen of Families
• Queen of Peace

These titles are beautifully reflected in the Litany of Loreto.

They do not mean that Mary is a goddess.

The Church firmly teaches that worship belongs to God alone.

Mary receives honor because of what God has done in her.

Her greatness is the work of God’s grace.

When Catholics honor Mary, they ultimately praise God, who chose her, filled her with grace, and made her the Mother of the Savior.

Mary as Queen of the Angels

Mary is honored as Queen of Angels because of her unique place in the mystery of salvation.

The angels announced the birth of Christ.

The Archangel Gabriel brought God’s message to Mary at the Annunciation.

Angels serve the purposes of God throughout salvation history.

Mary, as the Mother of the Incarnate Word and the one gloriously assumed into heaven, is honored by Christian tradition with this beautiful title.

The Queen of Angels reminds us that heaven is not a distant and impersonal reality.

Through Christ, humanity is called into communion with God.

Mary, assumed into heavenly glory, stands before us as a sign of hope for all believers.

Mary as Queen of the Saints

Every saint reflects something of the holiness of God.

Mary stands among the saints as the first and most perfect disciple of Christ.

Her life was a continuous response to grace.

She believed when others doubted.

She trusted when the future was unclear.

She remained faithful when following Christ involved suffering.

For this reason, she is honored as the Queen of All Saints.

The saints do not replace Christ, and neither does Mary.

All holiness comes from God.

Mary’s greatness consists precisely in the fact that she allowed God to work so completely in her life.

The Meaning of Mary’s Intercession

One of the most comforting aspects of Mary’s queenship is her role as a loving intercessor.

The biblical image of the queen mother reminds us that a mother may bring the needs of her children before the king.

At the wedding feast at Cana, Mary noticed a problem even before it was publicly expressed:

“They have no wine.”
— John 2:3

She brought the need before Jesus.

This scene has inspired Christians for centuries to approach Mary with confidence.

Like a loving mother, Mary is attentive to the needs of her children.

Yet Mary’s intercession never competes with the unique mediation of Jesus Christ.

Christ alone is our Savior.

Christ alone redeemed humanity through His death and resurrection.

Mary’s intercession is completely dependent upon Christ.

She prays for us and leads us to her Son.

We do not stop at Mary.

With Mary, we go to Jesus.

The Queenship of Mary and the Assumption

The feast of the Queenship of Mary is celebrated immediately after the Assumption because the two mysteries belong together.

The Assumption celebrates the completion of Mary’s earthly journey and her entrance, body and soul, into heavenly glory.

The Queenship celebrates her exalted place in that glory.

Mary’s life on earth was marked by faith, humility, obedience, suffering, and love.

Her heavenly glorification is not separated from her earthly discipleship.

The crown follows the Cross.

The glory follows faithfulness.

This is also a message for every Christian.

We may not understand every suffering we experience. We may not see immediately how God’s plan is unfolding.

But Mary’s life reminds us that faithfulness is never wasted.

God can transform suffering into glory.

The Queenship of Mary and Christian Hope

Mary is not only a Queen to be admired.

She is also a Mother who gives hope.

In Mary, the Church sees what God desires for humanity.

She has already reached the glory toward which the entire Church is journeying.

For Christians, Mary is therefore a sign of hope.

Her Assumption and Queenship remind us that:

• Death does not have the final word.
• Faithfulness has eternal value.
• Suffering can be transformed through Christ.
• Heaven is our true homeland.
• God remains faithful to His promises.

The Queen of Heaven reminds us that we, too, are called to the Kingdom of Heaven.

What Does This Feast Mean for Us Today?

The feast of the Queenship of Mary is not simply about placing a crown on an image or statue.

It challenges us to imitate Mary’s way of life.

1. Serve Rather Than Seek Power

Mary became Queen because she first became a servant.

In a world that often encourages competition and self-promotion, Mary teaches us the greatness of humble service.

True leadership is not domination.

It is service.

2. Remain Faithful in Difficult Times

Mary did not understand every detail of God’s plan.

Yet she trusted.

She remained faithful from Nazareth to Calvary.

When we face uncertainty, disappointment, or suffering, Mary teaches us to continue trusting God.

3. Bring Our Needs to Jesus

At Cana, Mary brought the needs of others to her Son.

We can confidently ask her to pray for us.

At the same time, her message remains clear:

“Do whatever he tells you.”

Mary always directs us toward obedience to Christ.

4. Become Instruments of Peace

Mary is honored as the Queen of Peace.

Our families, parishes, communities, and societies need people who bring peace rather than division.

We honor the Queen of Peace when we forgive, reconcile, encourage, and pray for one another.

5. Remember Our Heavenly Destiny

Mary’s Queenship lifts our eyes beyond the temporary concerns of this world.

Life on earth is a journey.

We are called toward eternal communion with God.

Mary, already glorified in heaven, encourages us to remain faithful until the end.

A Reflection on the Crown of Mary

The crown of Mary is different from the crowns of the world.

A worldly crown may represent power.

Mary’s crown represents faithfulness.

It was prepared through:

• Her humble “Yes” at the Annunciation.
• Her hidden years of ordinary life.
• Her concern for others at Cana.
• Her faith during moments of uncertainty.
• Her suffering at the foot of the Cross.
• Her prayer with the Apostles.
• Her complete surrender to God’s will.

Her crown teaches us that every act of love matters.

Every hidden sacrifice matters.

Every faithful prayer matters.

Every act of forgiveness matters.

Perhaps nobody sees these things.

But God sees them.

The Queen of Heaven herself lived much of her earthly life in obscurity.

Nazareth was not a palace.

Her greatness was hidden beneath an ordinary life.

And yet, through that humble life, God accomplished the greatest mystery in human history: the Incarnation of His Son.

Prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven

O Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
Mother of Jesus Christ and our loving Mother,
we honor you today with hearts filled with gratitude.

You who called yourself the humble servant of the Lord
were raised by God to the glory of heaven.

Teach us your humility,
your faith,
your obedience,
and your complete trust in God.

When our hearts are troubled,
bring us closer to Jesus.

When we are weak,
pray for us.

When we are discouraged,
give us hope.

When we are divided,
teach us the way of peace.

O Queen of Angels, pray for us.
O Queen of Apostles, guide the Church.
O Queen of Families, protect our homes.
O Queen of Peace, bring peace to our world.
O Queen Assumed into Heaven,
lead us one day to the eternal kingdom of your Son.

May we always follow your greatest instruction:

“Do whatever He tells you.”

And may we, after faithfully serving God on earth,
one day share in the joy of heaven.
