Feast Day: September 29

The Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael the Archangels on September 29. These three archangels are the only angels explicitly named in Sacred Scripture in the Catholic Bible. Their names and missions reveal different aspects of God’s loving care: Michael protects, Gabriel announces, and Raphael guides and heals.

Angels are spiritual creatures created by God. They glorify Him and serve as His messengers and ministers in the history of salvation. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, angels are “servants and messengers of God” (CCC 329).

Saint Michael the Archangel

The name Michael means “Who is like God?” Michael appears in Scripture as a defender of God’s people and a leader in the struggle against evil.

In the Book of Daniel, Michael is described as a great prince who stands for God’s people (Daniel 10:13; 12:1). In the Book of Revelation, Michael and his angels battle against the dragon and his angels (Revelation 12:7–9).

Michael therefore reminds us that evil does not have the final word. Christians invoke his intercession for protection, courage, and perseverance in faith.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel

The name Gabriel is commonly understood as “God is my strength.”

Gabriel appears prominently in the Gospel of Luke. He is sent by God to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11–20) and, most importantly, to the Virgin Mary to announce the Incarnation of the Son of God:

“You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.”
— Luke 1:31

Gabriel’s message leads to Mary’s humble response:

“Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

Gabriel therefore reminds us to listen to God’s word and respond with faith and obedience.

Saint Raphael the Archangel

The name Raphael means “God heals.”

Raphael is prominently featured in the Book of Tobit, where he accompanies Tobiah on his journey. He guides and protects him, helps him in his relationship with Sarah, and becomes an instrument of healing for both Sarah and Tobit (Tobit 5–12).

Raphael teaches us that God can accompany us even when we cannot recognize His presence. He is especially associated with healing, travellers, families, and those seeking God’s guidance.

What the Archangels Teach Us

The three archangels point us toward God rather than toward themselves.

Michael teaches us courage: stand faithfully for God and resist evil.

Gabriel teaches us obedience: listen to God’s word and say yes to God’s will.

Raphael teaches us trust: allow God to guide and heal us throughout life’s journey.

Their ministries remind us that the Christian life is not lived alone. God surrounds His people with His loving providence and sends His heavenly servants according to His divine plan.

A Feast That Points to God

The Church’s devotion to the archangels is ultimately devotion to God, their Creator and Lord. We do not worship angels; we honor them as God’s faithful servants and ask for their intercession.

On this feast, we can pray:

Saint Michael, protect us.
Saint Gabriel, guide us in proclaiming God’s word.
Saint Raphael, accompany us and bring us God’s healing.

A Practical Feast-Day Reflection

The feast becomes meaningful when we allow the mission of the three archangels to shape our ordinary lives.

1. Ask Saint Michael: What do I need to resist?

Is there something that is weakening my relationship with God—resentment, temptation, dishonesty, fear, gossip, or a harmful habit?

Practical step: Identify one thing you need to resist today and consciously choose the good instead.

2. Ask Saint Gabriel: What message do I need to hear or share?

Gabriel reminds us that God’s word must be received and proclaimed.

Practical step: Spend a few quiet minutes reading today’s Gospel. Then share a word of encouragement, faith, or kindness with someone who may need it.

3. Ask Saint Raphael: Where do I need God’s healing?

There may be a wound in our heart, a strained relationship, a family difficulty, or a burden we have carried for a long time.

Practical step: Bring that particular situation honestly before God in prayer. If possible, take one small step toward reconciliation, forgiveness, or seeking appropriate help.

4. Make one act of angel-like service

The angels serve God by serving His purposes.

Practical step: Do one good thing for another person today without seeking recognition—a visit, a phone call, a helping hand, a prayer, or an act of generosity.

5. End the day with gratitude

Before going to sleep, remember three things for which you can thank God. Offer them back to Him and ask for the grace to remain faithful tomorrow.

The feast can therefore become more than a remembrance of three great angels. It can become a personal invitation:

Like Michael, let me have courage.
Like Gabriel, let me listen and say yes to God.
Like Raphael, let me accompany and help those who need me.

A Simple Prayer for the Feast

Saint Michael, strengthen me to stand for what is good.

Saint Gabriel, help me hear God’s word and respond with faith.

Saint Raphael, accompany me in my journey and intercede for healing and guidance.

Holy Archangels, pray for my family, my loved ones, the sick, those who are struggling, and all who need God’s protection and grace.

May I never seek the angels apart from God, but always follow their example of faithful service to Him.

Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, pray for us.
