Joseph Edappallikkunnel was born on 22nd September 1927. His parents were Chako and Annamma Edappallikkunnel, from the parish of Moozhoor. He was baptised on 25th September 1927. He was the fifth of the ten siblings. Two of his sisters later became nuns, Sr. Mary Lourdes and Sr. Fabiola. He did his primary school studies at St. Mary’s Moozhoor and middle school studies at St. Ephrem’s Kozhuvanal. He had his high school studies at St. Ephrem’s Mannanam while staying at Lisieux Ashram Athirampuzha.

Soon after his high school examinations Joseph joined the MCBS as an aspirant. He was granted permission to do his novitiate with the 4th batch of mcbs novices. Fr. Michael cmi was his novice master. He made his religious profession on 30th April 1950. Then he was sent to Trichy to pursue his study of philosophy and theology at the major seminary there. Unfortunately he had hard time keeping up to the academic standard there. In 1954 he moved to the major seminary at Nellore. His hard work over there failed to bear the expected fruit. In 1957 he managed to obtain admission at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Punemalee, which was manged by the Salesians of Don Bosco. His hard work together with intense prayer helped him complete his studies and formation successfully.

Fr. Joseph Edappallikkunnel was ordained as priest on 6th April 1961 by Bishop Sebastian Vayalil, Bishop of Pala. His first assignment was as the confessor of the mcbs novices at the Mother House, Kaduvakulam. He also got involved in retreat preaching. In the following year he was transferred to Karimpany Ashram where the Novena to the Perpetual Help of Blessed Virgin Mary has been very active and lively. Fr. Joseph has been a very fervent devotee of the Blessed Mother from his years in the seminary. On 31st August 1964 he was transferred to MCBS Study House, Aluva, and appointed as the confessor of the seminarians. He has been very active in helping out the pastors in the nearby parishes. In December 1965 he was elected as one of the four councillors to the Superior General of the mcbs. In June 1966, Fr. Joseph was appointed as the Rector and Superior of the MCBS Study House. As superior of the house he undertook the construction of the first floor of the study house and also a building for the Sunday school. Also he initiated the project for the purchase of Cardamom Estate at Kombayar, Idukki, as a source of income. He has been involved in social service activities for the welfare of the poor in the neighbourhood.

In April 1970 Fr. Edappallikkunnel was transferred to Podimattam, Kanjirapally, and entrusted with task of constructing the novitiate house in the newly purchased land there. As usual he got busy helping out in the neighbouring parishes and involving in the social welfare activities for the poor in the neighbourhood. Besides, he had been very much interested in preaching retreats in the parishes and religious communities.

In the early morning of 4th April 1972, Fr. Joseph was on his way to participate in the Retreat Preachers’ Meet at Mangalapuzha Seminary; the motor cycle he was travelling had an accident at Avoli near Muvattupuzha; and Fr. Joseph was very seriously injured. Fr. Pulickel, the parish priest of Holy Magi church, Muvattupuzha came to his aid, administered the Sacrament of Anointing, and took him to Kottayam Medical College; but on the way his situation became very serious and Fr. Joseph Edappallikkunnel breathed his last in the Lord. Following the post-mortem process at the Medical College Hospital his body was brought, late in the evening, to Karimpany Ashram.

Funeral service for Fr. Joseph Edappallikkunnel was on 5th April 1972. From early morning onwards priests, religious sisters, members of the MCBS, his relatives and friends flowed in large numbers to pay homage to and pray for him. In the morning Bishop Sebastian Mankuzhikary, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulum, officiated the concelebrated Holy Mass and preached a touching homily highlighting Fr. Edappallikkunel’s deep spirituality, earnestness in pastoral ministry and love for the good of the people of God. In the afternoon the first part of the funeral service was officiated by Very Rev Fr. Joseph Maliparambil, Vicar General of Changanassery. Bishop Sebastian Vayalil of Pala was the main celebrant of the concluding ceremony, and he gave a very touching eulogy highlighting the personality and pastoral commitment of Fr. Edappallikkunnel.

Eucharistic devotion, deep love for the Blessed Mother, earnestness in serving the people, sense of duty, caring for the needy etc. are a few of his virtues that can attract us.

പ്രാഥമിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം മൂഴൂർ സെന്റ് മേരീസ് സ്കൂളിലും മിഡിൽ സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം കൊഴുവനാൽ സെന്റ് എഫ്രേം സ്കൂളിലും പാപ്പച്ചൻ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. തുടർന്ന് ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭയിൽ ചേരുകയും ശ്രീകണ്ഠമംഗലത്തുളള ആശ്രമത്തിൽ താമസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മാന്നാനം സെന്റ് എഫ്രേം സ്കൂളിൽ ഹൈസ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.

1949 ആഗസ്റ്റ് മാസത്തിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച സഭയിലെ നാലാമത്തെ ബാച്ച് നൊവിഷ്യേറ്റിൽ പാപ്പച്ചൻ ബ്രദറും അംഗമായിരുന്നു. 1950 ഏപ്രിൽ 30-ാം തിയതി പ്രഥമ വ്രതവാഗ്ദാനം നടത്തിയ പാപ്പച്ചൻ ബ്രദർ ത്രിശ്ശിനാപ്പള്ളി സെമിനാരിയിൽ പഠനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ കൃഷിപ്പണിക്കിടയിൽ തലയ്ക്ക് തൂമ്പാ കൊണ്ട് ഒരു വെട്ടേറ്റിരുന്നതിനാൽ നിരന്തരം തലവേദനയനുഭവിച്ചിരുന്ന പാപ്പച്ചന് പഠിക്കാൻ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. തന്നിമിത്തം, ത്രിശ്ശിനാപ്പള്ളി സെമിനാരിയിൽ നിന്നും 1954-ൽ നെല്ലൂർ സെമിനാരിയിലേയ്ക്കും അവിടെ നിന്ന് 1957-ൽ പൂനമല്ലി സെമിനാരിയിലേയ്ക്കും പഠനത്തിനായി പോയി. നിരന്തരം പരാജയമുണ്ടായിട്ടും നിരാശനാകാതെ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ സഹായമായ മാതാവിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സഹായം തേടി. തികഞ്ഞ ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ഭക്തനും മരിയ ഭക്തനുമായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം തീക്ഷ്ണത നിറഞ്ഞു കവിഞ്ഞൊഴുകുന്ന ഒരു വൈദികനായിത്തീരണമെന്നതായിരുന്നു ദൈവഹിതം.

1961 ഏപ്രിൽ മാസം 6-ാം തിയതി വ്യാഴാഴ്ച 9 മണിക്ക് കരിമ്പാനി ആശ്രമ ദേവാലയത്തിൽവച്ച് പാലാ രൂപതാദ്ധ്യക്ഷൻ മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ വയലിൽ പിതാവിൽ നിന്നു ജോസഫ് ശെമ്മാശ്ശൻ തിരുപ്പട്ടം സ്വകരിച്ചു.

ഭക്തിയും തീക്ഷ്ണതയും നിറഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ താമസിയാതെ കാടഞ്ചിറയിലെ നവ സന്ന്യാസികളുടെ കുമ്പസാരക്കാരനായി നിയോഗിച്ചു. ഇതിനിടയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ധ്യാനപരിപാടികൾ ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.

അടുത്ത വർഷം ആദ്യം അദ്ദേഹം കരിമ്പാനി ആശ്രമത്തിൽ നിയമിതനായി. മാതൃഭക്തനായ ജോസഫച്ചന് മാതൃഭക്തി സവിശേഷമായി പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് അവിടെ നിലവിലിരുന്ന നിത്യസഹായ മാതാവിന്റെ നൊവേനയ്ക്ക് അവസരം നല്കുകയുണ്ടായിന്നു. മുട്ടിന്മേൽ നിന്ന് കൈവിരിച്ച് പിടിച്ചാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജപമാല ചൊല്ലിയിരുന്നത്. ബസ് യാത്രയ്ക്കിടയിലും ജപമാല ചൊല്ലുക അച്ചൻ പതിവായിരുന്നു.

1964 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 31-ാം തിയതി ആലുവായിലുള്ള സ്റ്റഡി ഹൗസി ലേയ്ക്ക് അച്ചന് സ്ഥലം മാറ്റമുണ്ടായി. വൈദിക വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ കുമ്പസാരക്കാരനായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ട അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ തീക്ഷണതയും സേവന സന്നദ്ധതയും എളിമയും എല്ലാവർക്കും പ്രചോദനാത്മകമായിരുന്നു.

1965 ഡിസംബർ 14-ാം തിയതി ജനറാളച്ചന്റെ ആലോചനക്കാരിൽ ഒരാളായി അച്ചൻ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

1966 ജൂൺ 10-ാം തിയതി ആലുവാ സ്റ്റഡിഹൗസിന്റെ റെക്ടറും സുപ്പീരിയറുമായി നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. സ്റ്റഡി ഹൗസിന്റെ രണ്ടാം നിലയും സൺഡേ സ്കൂൾ കെട്ടിടവും അച്ചനാണ് പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചത്.

വടക്കേ ഇൻഡ്യയിൽ മിഷ്യൻ പ്രവർത്തനത്തിനു പോകാൻ ജോസഫച്ചൻ തീവ്രമായി ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്നു.

കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളിയിൽ പുതുതായി വാങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഭവനം പണിയാൻ 1970 ഏപ്രിൽ മാസം 12-ാം തിയതി അച്ചനെ ചുമതലപ്പെടുത്തി. രണ്ടു വർഷക്കാലം വളരെ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഭവന നിർമ്മാണം നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു. ഇതിനിടയിൽ ജാതിമതഭേദമെന്നിയേ അനേകരെ അച്ചൻ സഹായിച്ചു. ഒരിക്കലും സമയം തികയാതിരുന്ന, തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ള ഒരു മിഷനറിയായിട്ടാണ് അച്ചൻ ഓടി നടന്നത്.

ധ്യാനപ്രസംഗ കലയിൽ അത്ഭുതകരമായ വിജയം വരിച്ച വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു ജോസഫച്ചൻ.
ആലുവാ മംഗലപ്പുഴ സെമിനാരിയിൽ ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്ന ധ്യാനം പ്രസംഗകരുടെ സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുവാൻ 1972 ഏപ്രിൽ 04-ാം തിയതി രാവിലെ മോട്ടോർ സൈക്കിളിൽ കാഞ്ഞിരപ്പള്ളിയിൽ നിന്ന് പുറപ്പെട്ട അച്ചൻ മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയ്ക്കടുത്ത് ആവോലി എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു വച്ച് ആലുവാ – ഇടുക്കി ഫാസ്റ്റ് പാസഞ്ചറുമായി കൂട്ടിയിടിച്ച് ഗുരുതരമായി മുറിവേറ്റു. വാനിൽ കോട്ടയം മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിലേയ്ക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകുമ്പോൾ ഏറ്റുമാനൂർ വച്ച് അച്ചന്റെ ആത്മാവ് സ്വർഗ്ഗത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്രയായി

അഞ്ചാം തീയതി അഭിവന്ദ്യ പിതാവ് മാർ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ മങ്കുഴിക്കരി പിതാവ് കരിമ്പാനി ആശ്രമത്തിലെത്തി ബലിയർപ്പിക്കുകയും സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണത്തിനിടയിൽ ജോസഫച്ചന്റെ ദൈവഭക്തി, ആത്മരക്ഷയിലുള്ള ശുഷ്ക്കാന്തി എന്നിവ ഊന്നിപ്പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു. നാട്ടുകാർ, വീട്ടുകാർ, ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ മിഷനറി സഭാംഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവരേക്കാൾ നഷ്ടം സഹിക്കുന്നത് തിരുസ്സഭയാണെന്നും, പരേതനുവേണ്ടി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാനല്ല, പരേത നോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാനാണ് താൻ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നതെന്നും മങ്കുഴിക്കരി പിതാവ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യഭക്തി, ദൈവമാതൃഭക്തി, കർമ്മകുശലത, മിഷനറി മനോഭാവം, ശുശ്രൂഷാ ചൈതന്യം എന്നിവ ബ. ഇടപ്പളളിക്കുന്നേലച്ചനിൽ നിന്നു പഠിക്കേണ്ട സുകൃതങ്ങളാണ്.
