Early Life

According to an ancient tradition, before Dominic’s birth his mother dreamed of a dog carrying a torch in its mouth, setting the world ablaze with light. A Brilliant Student
Dominic studied at the University of Palencia, where he excelled in theology, philosophy, and the liberal arts. He developed a profound love for Sacred Scripture and became known for his intellectual gifts.
His compassion for the poor became evident during a devastating famine in Spain. Seeing people suffer from hunger, Dominic sold his valuable books and possessions to provide food for those in need, declaring:
“How can I study from these dead skins while living people are dying of hunger?”

Priest and Canon of Osma
After completing his studies, Dominic became a Canon Regular of the Cathedral of Osma and was ordained a priest.
