Introduction
Every authentic Christian spirituality begins and ends with Jesus Christ. The saints differ in temperament, vocation, culture, and mission, yet they all share one common center: an intimate relationship with the Lord.
For Saint Alphonsa, this relationship was deeply personal, profoundly Eucharistic, and entirely Christ-centered. Her love for Jesus was not merely theological or devotional—it was the very source of her identity. Christ was her Friend, Savior, Divine Bridegroom, Strength, and Eternal Reward.
It was this living relationship with Jesus that enabled her to endure years of illness, misunderstanding, and hidden sacrifice without losing hope.
To understand Saint Alphonsa’s spirituality, one must first understand her love for Christ.
Jesus at the Center of Everything
Throughout her surviving letters and spiritual notes, one truth appears repeatedly: Jesus occupied the center of her heart.
She did not seek extraordinary mystical experiences.
She did not pursue visions or supernatural favors.

She wanted to belong entirely to Christ.

“My Jesus, You know well that I desire to love You alone.”

She sought neither worldly success nor spiritual recognition.

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.”

Christ the Divine Bridegroom

Saint Alphonsa belonged to the Syro-Malabar Church, one of the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome.
