Introduction
No authentic Catholic spirituality is complete without love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. From the earliest centuries of Christianity, believers have recognized Mary as the Mother of God, the first disciple of Christ, and the model of perfect faith. Every saint has approached Christ in a unique way, but nearly all have walked that path in the company of His Mother.
For Saint Alphonsa, Marian devotion was not merely one among many practices of piety. It was woven into the very fabric of her spiritual life. From childhood until her final days, she looked to Mary as a loving Mother, a faithful guide, and a companion in suffering.
Just as Mary stood faithfully beneath the Cross of Jesus (John 19:25), Saint Alphonsa learned to stand beneath her own crosses with courage, patience, and hope.
Her devotion to Mary never distracted from Christ. Rather, like all authentic Marian spirituality, it led her ever more deeply into union with Jesus.
At the same time, Saint Alphonsa lived with an unwavering awareness of Heaven. The hope of eternal life gave meaning to her earthly sufferings and filled even her most difficult days with quiet joy. Mary: The First Disciple of Christ
The Gospel presents Mary as the perfect model of Christian discipleship.
When the Angel Gabriel announced God’s plan, Mary answered:
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)
This “yes” became the foundation of salvation history.
Saint Alphonsa saw in Mary the perfect example of surrender.
Everything she admired in the Blessed Virgin—humility, obedience, purity, trust, and perseverance—became virtues she sought to imitate in her own life.
For Saint Alphonsa, devotion to Mary meant learning to say “yes” to God every day.

Death as the Beginning of Eternal Life
For Christians, death is not the end.
It is the passage into eternal life.
Saint Alphonsa approached death with remarkable serenity.
She had spent her life preparing for this meeting with Christ.
When her earthly pilgrimage ended on 28 July 1946, those around her witnessed not despair but profound faith.
Her peaceful acceptance reflected Jesus’ promise:
“Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)
Her death became the completion of a life entirely offered to God.
Mary’s Assumption and Christian Destiny
The Church celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a sign of the destiny awaiting all the faithful.
Mary’s glorification points toward the resurrection promised to every Christian.
Saint Alphonsa’s devotion to Mary strengthened her hope in this promise.
She understood that the Mother who had reached heavenly glory now intercedes for her children on earth.
Thus Marian devotion became inseparable from hope in eternal life.
