Who is Ibn Zubayr? – Mecca – In Search of a Place – Episode 15
Ibn Zubayr is a governor to the Umayyad caliph, Abd al-Malik, who is responsible for being the first to truly create an Arab identity. Islam claims both as Muslim, but history reveals them to be Christian. This is evidenced by the currency with the symbol of the cross on them during the time period. During this time, Ibn Zubayr revolts, takes the black stone from Petra, and flees. Watch as Al Fadi and Dr. Jay discuss the significance of these events from the 7th century.
